Sara Amoroso: New school project in Easthampton worth the money

When Easthampton voters approved the debt exclusion to pay for a new pre-K-8 school in May 2018, it was with a large margin and heavy turnout.

Not only did I vote for the measure, but I worked on the ballot committee to get it passed because it was clearly the right thing to do both for our children and our taxpayers. Nobody enjoys paying more in taxes, but we should remember that the other options open to us would all have cost us much more.

Some might have preferred that we continue putting band-aids on our crumbling buildings, where students are forced to try to learn in basements, stair landings, closets and hallways. That option would cost at least as much as a new school, provide no new instructional space and get no reimbursement from the state.

Cries of poverty from those who own multiple valuable rental properties should ring hollow in the face of these facts.
