AMHERST — The Amherst College women’s hockey team won its sixth straight game Thursday night, defeating Suffolk, 5-1, at Orr Rink.

Jillian Mazzocca and Ava Simoncelli each scored twice, while Eliza Laycock had one goal in the victory.

Mazzocca, a freshman, had an assist to give her three points and boost her team-leading total to 21.

I think a big part of it is my team, and how supportive my team has been. Me coming in as a young player, they’ve supported me and given me the confidence to play my best,” Mazzocca said. “We’re a team . . . I wouldn’t have any points without them, it’s all about the team.”

Mazzocca leads the team with 10 goals.

“She’s definitely had a strong start to her career but I think her entire class has, which has provided us great depth,” coach Jeff Matthews said. “It’s exciting to have the depth we have. All four classes are contributing to each game, we’re having fun with it.”

Seven players had at least one point for Amherst (14-4-4).

Simoncelli, a senior, scored her first goals of the season in the win.

“My teammates allowed me to get shots through,” Simoncelli said. “We lean on each other for everything ... the relationships you build with your teammates are what bring it all together. The theme of my four years has been building together.”
