Dragons, devils and farm animals streamed into the school auditorium late Thursday night, bringing with them a crowd of eager spectators. Some 28 teams, in costume, were the centerpiece of the 22nd annual Trivia Bee at Amherst Regional Middle School.

Jen Manion, an Amherst resident, was talked into participating, for the first time, by a neighbor.

“It sounded like a hoot,” she said, clad in a head-to-toe moose costume. “Now that I'm here, I can see it’s the strangest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

Participants answered questions on topics ranging from history and sports to pop music and food.

The yearly event raises funds for Amherst area public schools — a point Solomon Goldstein-Rose said is crucial to the success of the event.

The Amherst Education Foundation, which sponsors the Bee, is providing $35,400 in grants this year to support students and teachers.

Rich Cairn of Amherst noted the many community business people who turn out for the event each year, unafraid to make fun of themselves for a good cause.

“The silliness is the best part,” Cairn said, after answering trivia questions as part of the Bueno Y Sano team. “This is really a great showing of community support for creative learning.”
