Amherst’s Fortin competes at Nike Nationals; SH’s Crawford wins 400 hurdles at Junior Olympic Championships

Claire Fortin of Amherst Regional competed in the first day of events at this year’s Nike Outdoor Nationals meet in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday.
Fortin ran in the freshman preliminary girls 100-meter race and finished in 13.04 seconds for 39th place. The top-nine runners qualified for the final, which was run later in the day.
Out of the 65 total athletes who competed, Evah Elleby of Texas, won the prelims with a time of 11.74 seconds.
Fortin will stick around Hayward Field at the University of Oregon this weekend as more of her teammates will join her for the next three days of competition. The Hurricanes freshman will participate in one of the four relays the team qualified for, which will begin Friday morning with the sprint medley relay.
Crawford, Webber compete in USATF New England Junior Olympic Championships
South Hadley’s Maggie Crawford and Jameson Webber each ran in two events in last weekend’s USA Track and Field New England Junior Olympic Championships at Gordon College.
Both ran the 100 hurdles and the 400 hurdles events in the 17-18 girls and boys divisions.
Crawford won the 400 hurdles in 1:05.01, after placing sixth in the 100 hurdles in 18.03 seconds. Webber picked up fourth place in each race, crossing the line in the 100 hurdles in 16.64 seconds, before snatching a time of 59.75 seconds in the 400 hurdles.
