The Amherst men’s lacrosse is headed to the national semifinals for the first time in program history with a 13-11 upset of No. 3 Tufts in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals on Wednesday in Medford.

The seventh-ranked Mammoths (17-3) will face No. 5 Williams in the national semifinals Sunday after the Ephs defeated RIT 12-11 in double overtime Wednesday. Williams won both meetings between the teams this season, including an 11-8 triumph in the NESCAC semifinals two weeks ago.

Amherst scored the final three goals of the first quarter to take the lead, which it would never relinquish. Sophomore goalie Gib Versfeld made 14 of his 19 stops in the first half to help Amherst take a four-goal advantage into the intermission.

The Mammoths scored the first two goals of the third quarter to extend the lead, but Tufts scored five straight to cut its deficit to one. Jon Coffey scored his third goal of the day to end the run early in the fourth quarter and the Mammoths held the Jumbos scoreless over the final 10:27 to secure the win.

Evan Wolf tallied three times for Amherst to go along with three assists on the day, including the helper on Coffey’s fourth quarter goal. Jackson Herrick, Brogan Mahon and Matt Solberg all scored two apiece for the Mammoths. Solberg’s second goal provided the insurance mark with two minutes left.
