AMHERST — Bay Road was closed between Hulst Road and South East Street as the result of a motor vehicle crash and downed power lines that occurred around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to public safety officials.

The driver of one vehicle was transported by an Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton with non-life-threatening injuries, said Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson, while the person in the second vehicle was evaluated and declined treatment. That person stayed in the vehicle until electric company crews cut power from the fallen lines.

Power company crews are expected to be on scene for several hours to make repairs. Drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes.
