SPRINGFIELD — Jack Nagy doesn’t rumble.

The Amherst Regional nose tackle secured a second-half interception against Putnam after reading a screen pass, then sprinted 9 yards to the end zone. He tucked the ball in the crook of his right arm like he’d carried it hundreds of times. It was his first career touchdown and put an exclamation point on Amherst’s 40-0 win Thursday.

“They’d been throwing a lot of screens all game. I saw it and went and got it. As I was going back I’m thinking to myself ‘don’t raise the ball up, you don’t want to get a penalty,’” Nagy said. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed about. As a lineman, you don’t always get a chance to score. It was nice to have.”

Nagy’s score provided the coup de grâce in an avalanche of a third quarter. Amherst (5-0) scored 22 points on three flashbulb touchdowns. The Hurricanes built a 12-0 halftime lead on grit and the legs of Dan Block. He ran for 94 yards in the first half and a 4-yard touchdown that put Amherst up 12-0 with 2:45 to halftime. Amherst scored its other touchdown on a 10-yard play-action pass from J.B. Mills (7-for-12, 99 yards) to C.J. Woodfine-Holmes.

Amherst coach Chris Ehorn Jr. told the team it needed more big plays in the second half.

“It’s up to us to spark the crowd and get ourselves excited,” he said.

Flint met steel when Mills threw a 10-yard slant between two closing defenders to Zayd Sadiq in stride. Sadiq ran away from three Putnam pursuers for a 58-yard touchdown.

“He’s a real fast kid, no one was going to catch him,” Ehorn said. “I think the toughest part of high school football sometimes is getting the ball in your playmakers hands.”

Then sometimes it falls from the sky right into their gloves. After Sadiq’s score, Amherst’s defense forced Putnam to punt after a three-and-out. Tom Dion burst through the line and blocked the kick, and it popped high into the air. Darius Robinson settled under it at the 37-yard line and put on his track spikes, sprinting untouched to the end zone for a 26-0 lead.

“I just started running, first instinct,” Robinson said. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

After Nagy’s interception and a two-point conversion put Amherst up 34-0, the Hurricanes only threw the ball twice more. Otherwise, Pierre Tillus grounded out the rest of the clock, running for 55 yards and a score with 9:48 left.

Since Amherst, the top team in the Division 5 power ratings, had a lead greater than 30 points in the fourth quarter, the final frame was played with a running clock. The Hurricanes defense held Putnam (0-5) to 74 yards of offense. It was Amherst’s third straight shutout.

“We have to let them know we’re not playing games this year,” Robinson said. “Every team that comes across, we try our hardest to shut out.”
