AMHERST — Police identified a man acting in odd ways outside the downtown Amherst bars early Saturday morning, grabbing a slice of pizza from one customer and making strange comments toward several women.

Police were alerted to the incident, one of 207 calls for service over the weekend, at 1:29 a.m., after the man ripped pizza out of a woman’s hands, and then began talking to and accosting other women gathered on the North Pleasant Street sidewalk. “Calvin Klein is racist” was one comment made by the man.

He was advised to leave people alone.

The calls for service over the weekend was a bit lower than 239 calls during the same time period over Labor Day weekend, with a few quality of life issues for police to address.

Sunday at 12:44 a.m., police issued four, $300 tickets for violating the town’s noise bylaw to Pine Street residents playing loud music. Officers initially cleared the party, but music continued to play as some partygoers remained.

Police also are summoning three people to court for being minors in possession of alcohol and violating the town’s open container bylaw, and issued three tickets to individuals for violating the open container bylaw, including two people who threw their alcohol containers into bushes along the road when observed by police.

Police issued two warnings to minors in possession of alcohol and five warnings for violating the open container bylaw, with one warning going to a man who unsuccessfully tried to conceal his Coors Light beer can underneath his shirt.
