The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals of the game, all in the first quarter, as the Mammoths shellacked Elizabethtown, 21-9, Wednesday at Pratt Field in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

NESCAC Player of the Year Evan Wolf had two goals and two assists in that first-quarter spurt for Amherst (15-3), which advances to host defending national champion Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the third round.

Jack Norton scored two of his team-high four goals in the opening 15 minutes while Jon Coffey and Jackson Herrick both added hat tricks in the game for the Mammoths.

Amherst was seven seconds away from pitching a first-quarter shutout before Elizabethtown scored with a man advantage. The Blue Jays won the second quarter 5-3 with three straight goals in the latter half of the quarter, but the Mammoths allowed just three goals in the second half – all of which came in the fourth quarter with Amherst holding a double-digit advantage.
