AMHERST — Even though one vehicle rolled onto its side, the five occupants of the two vehicles involved in a crash at the intersection of Northampton Road and University Drive Friday afternoon were able to walk away from the scene, according to Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson.

Firefighters and police officers were called to the crash at around 2:15 p.m., which involved a Volvo and Subaru.

Two of the people inside the rolled-over vehicle had already self-extricated themselves, while firefighter/ paramedics assisted the other two occupants to get out, Nelson said. All four people had been wearing seatbelts in that car, and so was the driver and lone occupant of the second vehicle.

Nelson said everyone involved in the crash refused treatment from ambulance personnel, who were there along with a fire engine crew and those on board a rescue truck.

Nelson said the crash illustrates that even with well-built vehicles, occupant safety is enhanced when people aren’t ejected.

Of the rolled over vehicle, Nelson said: “It’s got a ton of airbags and it’s built to take a hit, and all were wearing seatbelts.”

Firefighters spent about 40 minutes on scene putting absorbent down to clean up anti-freeze that spilled. Police officers made sure the scene was safe by having other vehicles rerouted past the crash.

“Police did a great job stopping and directing traffic,” Nelson said.
