We would like to encourage Northampton residents to consider applying to serve on the City Council’s recently-established Select Committee on Pesticide Reduction that will be tasked with researching and recommending ways that Northampton can reduce its use of pesticides (including herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, and other chemicals) on city-owned property.

Applicants should possess some level of expertise and experience in the fields of gardening, agriculture, recreation, forestry, turf management, organic and/or integrated pest management land care, conservation, public health, or other related fields.

At our March 21 meeting, the Northampton City Council unanimously approved a resolution we co-sponsored to establish a Select Committee on Pesticide Reduction for the City. The committee will consist of two city councilors and up to eight city residents, who will be appointed by the Council President Ryan O’Donnell, from a pool of interested applicants.

The Select Committee will undertake its mandate over a five-month period only, convening on May 1 and submitting its report and recommendations to the full City Council by Oct. 1.

The turnaround time to apply is very short. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, April 16, by 12 p.m. Interested individuals can apply by sending a letter of interest to: citycouncil@northamptonma.gov that includes their address and phone number, as well as a brief description of their relevant background and the reason for their interest.

For more information and to view the resolution establishing the Select Committee, visit the Select Committee webpage (https://northamptonma.gov/1988/Select-Committee) on the Northampton City Council webpage on the City’s website.

Thank you.
