WHATELY – The Whately School Committee is exploring ways to secure financing to expand upon the elementary school’s playground to include a section for kindergartners and pre-kindergartners.

The current playground was installed around 2005 following with $10,000 grant and $20,000 in PTO fundraising over roughly three years, according to Selectboard member Joyce Palmer-Fortune. She also said parents helped install it to keep down costs.

Interim Superintendent Darius Modestow, who is in contract negotiations to become superintendent, said this process is in the preliminary stages.

“We kind of had that realization that this is going to be a long-term process to get this up and going,” he said after a Whately School Committee meeting Monday.

Modestow said Whately Elementary School Principal Kristina Kirton and Kimberly McCarthy, the district’s early childhood coordinator, will gather more information on the topic for further discussion.
