200 Years Ago

■Gaius Pomeroy will sell at public auction on Wednesday, the 17th inst., at two o’clock in the afternoon, at Oliver Warner’s Tavern, his house and lot pleasantly situated in that part of Northampton called New Boston, and near Round Hill. The premises contain about 3/4 of an acre of land, with the out-houses, and will be sold to the highest bidder without reserve. 

■Ready-made boots & shoes are on hand and for sale, or made to measure at short notice, by Z. Wilder, opposite the meetinghouse in Northampton. Those who favor him with their custom may depend on good work and at low prices. Wanted, as an apprentice at the boot and shoe making business, an industrious boy, 15 or 16 years old. 

100 Years Ago

■As returns from the state continued to roll in, they served only to swell the tide upon which Calvin Coolidge is riding to an apparent overwhelming victory over his two opponents in the 1924 presidential contest. The President was up bright and early today, notwithstanding that he remained awake until long past midnight receiving election returns. 

■After going through one of the most interesting elections of late years, Northampton is today basking in the glory of the election of Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States. Honor has come to the city in the overwhelming choice of our fellow townsman. 

50 Years Ago

■The possible site for a state-financed skating rink in Hampshire County has been narrowed to eight choices in four towns, while state officials have not yet visited any of the sites. Amherst tops the list with four offerings. Northampton has two possible sites, with Hadley and Belchertown offering one spot each. 

■The Pro-Brush Division of the Vistron Corp. on Pine Street in Florence has laid off 22 employees, effective today. Charles Gaudry, personnel director of the Florence-based plant, said the 22 employees were trimmed from its 1,000 person work force because of a slow-down in work orders.
