50 Years Ago

■“Good Vibrations” occurred at the Metawampee Spring Festival at the University of Massachusetts Saturday and Sunday. It was estimated that 6,000 to 8,000 youths gathered at the pond Saturday and crowds from 10,000 to 15,000 at the stadium fields on Sunday for the big rock concert.

■“Conscientious Objection — What it is! — What it is not!” is the subject of a forum to be held Tuesday at the University of Massachusetts campus center. The Newman Club is sponsoring this program in order to inform young men of draft age of their legal and moral rights under the Selective Service laws.

25 Years Ago

■With more money set aside for finishing touches, ground will be broken tomorrow for the expansion and renovation of Amherst Regional High School. An addition to the school will double the space at the high school to accommodate growing enrollment as well as the ninth grade, which will be transferred from the junior high.

■Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. David E. Hentz of Florence was awarded the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal by the grand master of Masons in Massachusetts. Hentz is secretary of Jerusalem Lodge of Masons in Northampton and is serving his fourth year as master of Hampshire Lodge in Haydenville.

■Owen Freeman-Daniels, a longtime member of the Ward 3 Neighborhood Association, took out papers Monday to run for the City Council seat recently vacated by Angela Plassmann. “I was not expecting to run but the situation in Ward 3 is serious,” said Freeman-Daniels, 31, a financial adviser, who spoke from the steps of City Hall.

■In a complicated court case with no happy ending, two teenagers Wednesday were placed on probation after admitting they harassed a classmate who later killed herself. The unprecedented case against 15-year-old Phoebe Prince’s alleged tormentors focused the country’s attention on the problem of school bullying.
