200 Years Ago■Auction tomorrow! The tavern stand now occupied by Mr. Henry Smith, having been disposed of, and he about leaving the premises, the furniture of said house, consisting of many elegant and valuable articles, will be exposed for sale at auction on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 10 o’clock A.M. on the premises, Samuel Phelps, auctioneer.
■Benj. H. Henshaw wishes to inform his friends and the public that he continues to manufacture at his shop a few rods north of the courthouse in Northampton all kinds of chairs, now in use, which he offers low for cash or credit.
100 Years Ago■Saturday afternoon the firemen were called to put out an unusual fire for the month of January. It was a grass fire on King Street back of the armory. Last night their help was called for in the fire at the Nonotuck Silk Co.’s garage.
■An inch or more of clinging snow transformed the landscape of Northampton this morning, making Jenny Lind’s characterization more apt than ever. It’s the first time this winter we have had such a fairy coating on our leafless elms and our not-too-lovely buildings, and the effect was certainly beautiful.
50 Years Ago ■The Northampton-Springfield Area Chapter of the Franklin Pierce College National Women’s Committee ended a contest Friday designed to benefit the college’s library. The culminating event was held in the office of Northampton Mayor Sean M. Dunphy with a color television set going to the winner, Miss Clara L. Hayes, of Northampton.
■Hampshire County residents were stunned twice when they arose this morning. First, when they glanced at their thermometers reading anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees below zero, and second, when the weather forecast told them that tonight’s temperatures will be as much as 10 degrees colder than last night’s readings.
