50 Years Ago

■Miss Gloria Bisaillon has retired from the Northampton school system after 30 years, 29 as head of the Girls’ Physical Education Department at Northampton High School. A 1931 graduate of NHS, she was the leading girls’ basketball player in western Mass. and captained the Devilettes during her senior year.

■Private David Elliott has recently completed advanced training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and will take up new duties when he leaves for Germany in February. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Elliott, 63 Jackson St., Northampton.

25 Years Ago

■Before a group of downtown businesspeople, architects and contractors, Northampton Film Associates Inc. launched an effort yesterday to save the Calvin Theater as a space for movies and live entertainment. By using a $18,000 donation, the group will attempt to lay the groundwork for an eventual sale and help preserve the Calvin as a home for artists and theater-goers.

■It could be a little harder to find a drink in Northampton the first week in March. The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission this week passed down its verdict on the 25 restaurants, bars and liquor stores caught last summer selling to an under-age patron. All will receive a three-day suspension, the minimum penalty.

■Local and state police and the FBI are continuing an investigation of a cache of weapons and explosives discovered Monday at the Amherst Self-Storage Facility on Route 9. Belchertown Police Chief Francis Fox said that a couple who had recently purchased a storage unit there at an auction reported the find at 1:30 p.m.

■The city of Northampton is eyeing the purchase of 23 acres along Broad Brook that would link the Fitzgerald Lake and Beaver Brook conservation areas. The City Council tonight will consider an order authorizing the Conservation Commission to buy 23 acres from the Girl Scouts for $23,000.
