NORTHAMPTON – Only six candidates so far have taken out nomination papers to run for nine seats on the Northampton School Committee in November’s election.

As of late Wednesday, City Clerk Pamela Powers said no one has taken out papers to represent Ward 2 or Ward 6 on the committee, and one of two at-large seats has also drawn no candidates yet.

At consecutive School Committee meetings in May, a total of five members announced they would not seek reelection: Rebecca Busanky (Ward 1), Laura Fallon (Ward 2), Sean Condon (Ward 4), Lonnie Kaufman (Ward 6) and Susan Voss (at-large).

Margaret S. Robbins is running for the Ward 1 seat and Michael K. Stein is running in Ward 4. Both are currently unopposed.

Emily Serafy-Cox (Ward 3), Dina Levi (Ward 5), Kaia Goleman (Ward 7) and Roni Gold (at-large) have pulled nomination papers to run for reelection. All are running for their second terms, and all are currently unopposed.

Mayor David Narkewicz, who chairs the School Committee, has decided not to run for reelection after three terms as the city’s chief executive.

City Hall is closed to the public until July 6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but candidates can make an appointment to pick up nomination papers by visiting the city clerk’s website.

Ward candidates must gather signatures from 50 voters in order to appear on the ballot. At-large candidates need 100 signatures.

Candidates for all offices have until July 30 at 5 p.m. to submit the papers to the Board of Registrars and then until Aug. 13 to submit them to the city clerk. July 30 is effectively the last day to request the papers, but candidates are encouraged to leave themselves enough time to gather signatures.

The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 2.
