On Sunday, Sept. 22, at 9:30 a.m., runners will take their marks at the base of Mount Holyoke for the 40th annual Summit Run — a scenic and challenging 5K race to the top.

Sponsored by the Sugarloaf Mountain Athletic Club, the Summit Run 5K begins in Hockanum Village in South Hadley and ends at the Summit House on Mount Holyoke — with an 800-foot climb up Skinner State Park Road in between.

The rewards for the grueling climb are sweet. All participants will enjoy refreshments and breathtaking views at the top, and each female and male age-group winner will receive an Atkins Farms apple pie.

For participants ages 60 and up, age-group prizes will be awarded in five-year increments.

Water will be available at the half-way point, and timing will be provided by Rat Race Timing, with instant results available upon finishing. Because parking at the top is limited, runners and walkers must return on foot to the parking area at the starting line.

A portion of proceeds from the race will benefit Kestrel Land Trust. To learn more or register, visit: https://sugarloafmountainathletic.org/events/summit-run-5k/.

Race day registration is also available.
