Weekend Planner — Music: The Wisteria String Quartet performs in Cummington

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

A subgroup of the Wistaria Chamber Music Society, the Wistaria String Quartet was formed in 2013 to perform works by avant-garde composers George Crumb and Steve Reich as part of Amherst College’s Copeland Colloquium. Since then, the Quartet — cellist Wayne Smith, violist Delores Thayer and violinists Sarah Briggs and Kaila Graef — has demonstrated a commitment to bringing new and classical works to communities throughout the Valley, performing at such nontraditional venues as Greenfield’s Pushkin Gallery, Cummington’s Bryant Homestead and Old Creamery, the Hampshire County Jail and area schools.

On Sunday, the foursome will be at the West Cummington Congregational Church Parish House where they’ll be joined by baritone David Perkins for a concert of quartets by Franz-Josef Haydn, Gabriel Fauré and Dmitri Shostakovich, plus “Dover Beach,” a work by Samuel Barber for baritone and string quartet.

4 p.m. Free admission; donation suggested. The parish house is at 27 Main St., off Route 9, in West Cummington.
