Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the South Hadley baseball team rallied to keep its winning streak alive on Tuesday.

The Tigers scored three runs in the frame, and held on for a 6-5 victory – the club’s eight win in a row to put them at 8-2 on the season.

John Viola tossed a scoreless seventh inning to snag the save, as Burke Belsky was credited with the win. Justin Moskal started and went five innings, striking out five while allowing just two hits and two runs.

Logan Carpenter doubled and drove in two runs for South Hadley, and Jack Maziarz tripled and drove in a run.

Belchertown 6, Chicopee Comp 5 — The Orioles walked it off with a pair in the bottom of the seventh to complete an impressive comeback on Tuesday. Evan Ferguson singled in the tying run. With two outs, the bases loaded and a full count, Joe Jordan hit the walkoff single for his first career varsity hit.

CJ Rivers slashed two hits, including a double, for Belchertown, and Jordan drove in a pair. The Orioles trailed 5-2 in the fourth inning before scoring four unanswered runs. Ryan Gould earned the win in relief, allowing just four hits and one run across four innings.

Hampshire 13, Easthampton 3 (5) — Colin Hogan went all five innings, striking out six to improve to 3-0 on the mound for the Raiders. He added an RBI single at the plate.

Hampshire (8-3) received three hits, including a double, and two RBIs from Drew Thompson. Phil Morin (two hits, two RBIs), Brennan Stortz (double) and Liam Pond (double) also keyed the offensive effort.

Easthampton’s Topher Reardon was a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBIs. 

Mahar 1, Smith Voc 0 — Kaleb Jorritsma took the tough-luck loss for the Vikings, as he went the distance with nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits and two walks.

Mahar scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth. James Lavallee had two hits for Smith Voc, which outhit the Senators 6-2.

Pioneer 7, Frontier 3 — The Redhawks led 3-0 into the bottom of the fourth before the Panthers rallied and snagged the win in Northfield.

Rosco Palmer had two hits for Frontier, and Tyler Cusson added a double.

Hopkins 10, Greenfield 9 — The Green Wave held a 9-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Golden Hawks refused to go away. 

Alex West singled in Cooper Beckwith to tie the game before an error allowed the game-winning run to come across, as Hopkins pulled off a Hampshire League West triumph at Vets Field. The Hawks were the home team in Greenfield as their home field continues to be renovated.

Hopkins scored four runs in the first inning but the Green Wave battled back to regain the lead. Beckwith finished with three hits and two RBIs while Beau Elson knocked a triple that drove in two for Hopkins.  

Wahconah 16, Amherst 2 (5) — The Warriors recorded five runs in three separate innings to run past the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Thatcher Rudnik ripped a double and Matthew Vassallo recorded a hit and scored a run for Amherst.

Softball

Hampshire 7, Agawam 1 – Ryanne Dubay went all seven innings, limiting the Brownies to just three hits to pick up the victory for Hampshire.

Rachael Hickox and Chelsea Vanasse each had three hits to propel the Raiders offense, while CC Thayer and Raegan Dubay both had a hit and two RBIs.

Gateway scored in the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Kaitlyn Maynard knocked in an RBI double and Angela Magyar struck out seven in seven innings.

Holyoke 16, Ware 6 — Alanna Bonilla (three), Kylie Blaha (two) and Jayshalee Santos (two) each collected multi-hit days as the Purple Knights’ offense exploded in the win.

Bonilla allowed seven hits while striking out four, earning the complete-game victory in the circle for Holyoke.

Central 18, Smith Academy 9 —  Caitlin Graves had two hits, including a home run, and Emma Moynihan belted a grand slam for the Falcons in a loss on Tuesday.

Alexa Jagodzinski (hit, two RBIs), Emilia Neves (hit, two RBIs), Marissa Belina (three hits, run) and Emma Tisdell (two doubles, run) were other offensive contributors for Smith Academy.

Mount Greylock 24, Frontier 12 —  No. 9 hitter Whitney Campbell racked up five RBIs to go with her first varsity home run, and Sophia Pinardi also went deep for the Redhawks in a loss in Williamstown.

Delaney Fifield, Gabby Adams and Raine Wonsey had two hits apiece for Frontier.

Boys lacrosse

Wahconah 20, South Hadley 10 — Ethan Roy and Sly Curto put up hat tricks for the Tigers, but the visiting Warriors still managed to double them up in a loss on Tuesday.

Owen Dawson scored twice and added two assists, Gavin Losty recorded three points (two goals, one assist) and Noah Marion found the back of the net to round out South Hadley’s scoring. 

Girls lacrosse

Westfield 14, Belchertown 9 — The Orioles more than held their own against powerhouse Westfield, led by a hat trick from Madysen LePage.

McKenzie LePage netted two goals for Belchertown as well.

Hampshire 17, McCann Tech 2 — Freshman Holly Kowalcyzk led the Raiders with four goals and Reese O’Connell scored a hat-trick. Reagan Mott, Ryleigh Fennessy and Mary Thibault each scored multiple goals as well. 

Dana Warren led Hampshire with four assists.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 4, Pope Francis 1 — The Orioles swept the doubles matches, with the No. 1 tandem of Mia Corish and Emalee Chaisson (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 team of Bella Cebula and Alena Karabetsos (6-1, 6-3) handling things comfortably on the road in Springfield.

Ava Shea was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at first singles, and Amanda Murray took a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2.

Hampden Charter East 3, Frontier 2 — Thanushi Ratnatunge won at third singles (6-2, 6-2), and the second doubles team of Esther Ehle and Kayla Fagan won again for the Hawks (6-2, 6-4).

St. Mary’s 4, PVCICS 1 — Sabine Loinaz and Eloise Tolejo won PVCICS’ lone match of the afternoon, defeating their first doubles opponent 6-2, 6-4.

Boys volleyball

Granby 3, Commerce 0 — Eleven Michael Swanigan kills and 16 assists from Jake Gagnon vaulted the Rams to an easy win on Tuesday evening.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-12, 25-11.

Swanigan (11 digs) and Braedan Gallagher (six kills, 11 digs) each had five aces as part of the team’s 19 total.

Frontier 3, Belchertown 1 — The Redhawks knocked off the Orioles 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 on Tuesday night. The Carey brothers (Aleks and Jack) combined for 46 kills and Aleks Carey notched a new career-high with 33.

Tavo Vincent-Warner led all players with 38 assists. At the service line, Will Petrin recorded four aces and no errors across 32 total serves.

Belchertown’s Rainer Kristensen totalled 32 assists and Noah Yankson recorded 14 kills, while Zach Dragon and Brian Burns each added eight.

Boys tennis

Belchertown 5, Central 0 — The Orioles had no problem with Central on Monday afternoon, and Graham Guardenfield’s 7-5, 10-8 win served as the match of the day at second singles to clinch a match sweep.

Trevor Weiss won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles, Luke Dudek sailed to a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles while Matthew Metzger and Tyler Burrows (No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3) and Mason Pobieglo and Alberto Munoz-Boa (No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-4) rounded out Belchertown’s winners.

Boys volleyball

South Hadley 3, Hampden Charter West 0 — Beau Briere put down 10 kills, Junoon Giridhar dished out 18 assists and Sam Morozov added 15 digs and five aces to lead the Tigers to a decisive sweep over Hampden West on Monday.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-17. Jonathon Grim (five aces, three kills, four digs), Connor Racine-Rocheleau (five kills, three aces) and Christian Aponte (four kills, five digs, one ace) all contributed as well. 

Track and field

Minnechaug 90, Amherst 53 — Elizabeth Sawicki turned in first-place finishes in the 400 hurdles (1:10.9) and the pole vault (8-06), showing off versatility on the track and in the field for the ‘Canes.

Milo Osborne’s time of 21.0 in the 100 hurdles was good enough for first, and Kora Brissett (200, 26.4), Liana Page (high jump, 4-08) and Yairelis Bachand (discus, 77-11) each won their respective events as well. Brissett, Page, Ruby Austin and Ololara Baptiste combined to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 51.8.
