Monday updates

Updating some news from Sunday's games.

Reggie Bush (NO-RB) expects to play on Sunday after a sprained ankle yesterday.

Sounds like Shaun Alexander (SEA-RB) won't be returning this week.

Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback.

Awesome long feature on Bill Parcells from the New York Times mag.

Oh, and the Patriots are pretty good.

See you Friday!

10 Reactions: Week 8

1. LT and LJ combine for 338 yards and seven TDs. Nice to be back to normal.

2. Now, can we just get Shaun Alexander (SEA-RB) back before Week 16? Maurice Morris (SEA-RB) just isn't getting the job done.

3. After things finally looked set in Denver, Mike Bell (DEN-RB) gets more carries, yards and TDs than Tatum Bell (DEN-RB). I officially hate Mike Shanahan.

4. Apparently, Vince Young (TEN-QB) CAN run the ball in the NFL.

5. Break up the Raiders! Two wins in a row! No way Ben Roethlisberger (PIT-QB) should have started that game.

6. Nice surprise from Seneca Wallace (SEA-QB), who looked decent in his first NFL start with 198 passing yards and three TDs. Of course, those two INTs hurt, but not the train wreck some were expecting.

7. I really, really don't get Jacksonville. After getting CRUSHED by Houston last week, they beat Philly. And then Houston loses to Tennessee. I say this every week, but this league is CRAZY.

8. I like Tiki Barber (NYG-RB), but this discussion about his pending retirement is already horribly old and, yes, it's only Week 8.

9. Aren't the San Diego Chargers the best team in the league when their coach isn't sabotaging them?

10. As for Monday night, I have a bad feeling about this one for the Patriots. I think Minnesota matches up pretty well against them and I'll take the Vikings by seven.

**I'll have some links updating injuries and such sometime Monday night. See you then.***

Updates

Here are a few links updating things from Sunday.

San Diego's Shawne Merriman, the reigning defensive rookie of the year, was suspended four games for violating the league's steroids policy.

Ben Roethlisberger (PIT-QB) suffered a concussion in the game against Atlanta. His status for next week is uncertain.

Looks like Matt Hasselbeck (SEA-QB) is out 2 to 4 weeks with a knee injury.

Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback looks at Tiki Barber's (NYG-RB) announcement that he will retire at the end of the year.

Ten Thoughts: Week 7

Here we go:

1. Having the two Super Bowl QBs injured in the same week has to be one of the freakiest things to happen in a long time. You can't help feeling back for Ben Roethlisberger (PIT-QB). He was finally starting to play well and then he gets injured.

2. This was like super performance Sunday from some guys. Hines Ward (PIT-WR), Alge Crumpler (ATL-TE) both scored three touchdowns. If you have Team QBs in your league, the PIT QBs combined for five TDs. Joey Harrington (MIA-QB) threw for 414 yards! ... and three interceptions! Chester Taylor (MIN-RB) had 169 rushing yards.

3. Larry Johnson (Kansas City-RB) got back on track with 132 yards and two TDs against a good San Diego defense and the Chiefs, who were crushed last week against Pittsburgh, downed a Chargers team some are considering Super Bowl favorites.

4. Speaking of teams you can't get a hold on, I honestly thought a lot of Jacksonville this week (they were my Survivor pick because I'd already used some of the other top teams) and then they get obliterated by Houston. Houston! Every year, the Jaguars defense makes me wonder if they are Super Bowl candidates and then they have a game like this.

5. I'm not at all surprised that the Arizona Cardinals couldn't bounce back from that mind-blowing loss to Chicago on Monday night. The disappointing this is that they gave the Oakland Raiders what is likely to be their lone win of the season.

6. Speaking of the Raiders, nice of you to finally show up Randy Moss (OAK-WR).

7. Miami really stinks. Have I mentioned that on here before?

8. Trent Green (KC-QB) was finally cleared to practice this week by doctors. It's too bad for Damon Huard (KC-QB), who has played pretty well aside from that Steelers disaster.

9. Was it me or did no one play defense this week? Well, except for the Pats, Broncos and Ronde Barber (TB-DB), but still. No, Oakland doesn't count.

10. Figures that the first Monday night I'm working in five weeks is a terrific matchup between the Giants and the Cowboys. I'll take the Giants to rough up Drew Bledsoe (DAL-QB) enough to force a few turnovers and eek out a win. Maybe Tiki Barber (NYG-RB) will finally get in the end zone.

Friday extras

I have to admit, I was amazed watching Matt Leinart (Arizona-QB) play against Chicago last Monday night. He was cool, calm and collected against a defense we all thought might physically harm him.

I hate to say it, he reminded me of the first few times I saw Tom Brady (New England-QB) play for the Patriots. Now, I'm not trying to get ahead of myself by comparing the two. It wouldn't be fair to Leinart, but you had to appreciate his poise, especially in what should have been the game-winning drive.

I always thought Leinart would turn out to be a pretty good pro, but he's convincing me that he may just be something special. It'll be fun to watch his career unfold.

Here is the NFL Injury Report with key fantasy players highlighted. I'd definitely stay away from Matt Jones (Jacksonville-WR) until he proves he's healthy.

Week 6 Reactions

Right off the bat, I'm going to apologize for stealing from SI.com's Peter King, but here are 10 things I'm thinking about after Week 6.

1. What the heck was LaDainian Tomlinson (San Diego-RB) doing on the field in the fourth quarter of a 48-19 win over San Francisco? Sure, LT scored his fourth touchdown in that quarter, much to the delight of his fantasy owners, but was that really worth the risk of seeing him get injured. Isn't that what caused Drew Brees' (New Orleans-QB) shoulder injury last year when he was with the Chargers ... being on the field when there was nothing to play for? Not smart.

2. I really wish I had had the guts to list Larry Johnson (Kansas City-RB) as my SIT HIM pick for this week. After that ugly neck injury last week, I had major reservations about LJ and really thought about writing about him in my column, but couldn't pull the trigger. What does he do? Finish with 26 yards rushing and a TD as his Chiefs were destroyed by the Steelers.

3. I'm positively giddy about Vince Young (Tennessee-QB) getting his first NFL win. He can thank Travis Henry (Tennessee-RB) for that. Great job blocking up front in the running game, too.

4. I'm officially off the Jake Plummer (Denver-QB) bandwagon. I guess I was never really on it, but he's painful to watch at this point. Only 102 passing yards and no TDs against Oakland? You have got to be kidding me. And yes, I know he had a TD dropped, but he should have three TDs against the Raiders.

5. The Dolphins really, REALLY stink. They didn't even run the ball well until they were behind and the Jets, who held on for a 20-17 win, were keying pass. Blech!

6. I'm so sick of Terrell Owens (Dallas-WR) at this point. Now we'll hear stories this week about whether everything is okay in Dallas now that he got the ball and scored three TDs. Are people really watching SportsCenter for him? I don't get the oversaturation of coverage, but maybe I'm in the minority.

7. Tiki Barber (NY Giants-RB) REALLY needs to score a touchdown. He's doing far too much work for the team not to reward him on the goal line at some point.

8. I'm very concerned about Reggie Bush (New Orleans-RB), who had 11 carries for 25 yards and four catches for 35. Is this really the next Marshall Faulk/LT?

9. Those are some bad secondaries in Seattle and St. Louis.

10. Do you think Matt Leinart's (Arizona-QB) family tonight is like James Braddock's at the end of Cinderella Man? Are they not even hoping for a win, just hoping he'll get out of there alive? I'm very, very interested to see how he handles the Chicago defense.

Week 5 Reactions

Well, while the Eagles-Cowboys game lived up to the hype, Terrell Owens (Dallas-WR) certainly didn't. Honestly, I'm really surprised. He's a guy who always seems to play well when the spotlight is shining (positively or negatively) and I thought he'd have a big game. Couldn't have happenned to a nicer guy.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Have to go with Donovan McNabb (PHI-QB), who continues to have a phenomenal season regardless of who is lining up at receiver around him. McNabb finished with 354 passing yards and three TDs (one rushing) in a big NFC East win for the Eagles.

GOAT OF THE DAY: Same game, but Drew Bledsoe (Dallas-QB) shouldn't be the Cowboys quarterback next week. After such a dreadful performance (18-for-38, 223 yards, one rushing touchdown), it's time for Bill Parcells to roll with Tony Romo (Dallas-QB).

STILL HOLDING MY BREATH: The awful drag-down grab by Arizona's Antrel Rolle on Larry Johnson (Kansas City-RB) late in Sunday's game was scary for all LJ owners. He wasn't moving for a while until finally getting up and walking off the field. He didn't return and while it looks like he'll be ok, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on reports out of KC this week. How does Rolle not get thrown out of the game for that? It seemed pretty blatant to me.

ROOKIE QBS: I write a whole column talking about the troubles associated with rookie QBs and then Matt Leinart (ARZ-QB), Bruce Gradkowski (TB-QB) and Vince Young (TEN-QB) all play pretty darn well. Leinart looked like a veteran through most of the game and Gradkowski did a nice job as well. Young didn't post great numbers, but he had the Titans on the verge of beating Indy and scored on a nice little TD run. Of course, none of them won, but I was impressed by all three this week, especially Leinart.

I'M A BELIEVER: Here's to Greg Jennings (GB-WR) who is officially a must-start in all fantasy leagues. The rookie had his best week yet with 105 receiving yards on five catches and a touchdown this week. He's the Anquan Boldin (ARZ-WR) of this season.

TEAM DEFENSE THAT CARRIED/KILLED YOU: The Minnesota Defense didn't just carry/kill you (two TDs scored, three INTs, fumble recovery, five sacks), it did so very late. Both of the Vikings' defensive scores came in the fourth quarter. It went from pretty good day to in-the-clouds in a hurry.

KICKER THAT CARRIED/KILLED YOU: Robbie Gould (CHI-K) had four field goals and four extra points against Buffalo. Yippee.

MONDAY, MONDAY
Denver at Baltimore, 9 p.m. - I'm expecting very little offense in this one, which means it'll probably be 41-34 with the way I've been going this season. While the Monday night games have featured some big performances this season, I'm wondering if this is the week where we see very few trailing teams come back because the defenses dominate.

Friday Extras

Best thing about having a newborn baby to take care of: I've missed virtually all of the T.O./McNabb coverage this week. Thank god that game isn't on ESPN Monday night. With how much the channel loves to promote itself, I can't imagine how ridiculous it would be this week.

Greg Garber looks at all the players looking for revenge this week.

Michael Smith on McNabb.

Peter King at SI.com started the whole this Monday in his MMQB and then subtlely complained about the sure-to-be oversaturation of McNabb-T.O. this week. Gotta love that guy.

Finally, Bill Simmons on fantasy vs. reality. Obviously, this has been done before.

Here's the NFL Injury Report.

Week 4 Reactions

It's official, the Miami Dolphins stink. I was willing to give them some leeway heading into this week, but a 17-15 loss to the Houston Texans officially ends all encouragement for Fins fans. The Texans ARE a bit improved under new coach Gary Kubiak, but there is no reason Miami and super overhyped QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA-QB) can only manage one TD against the Houston Texans. They even allowed No. 1 pick Mario Williams (HOU-DE) to get his first NFL sack! I was hoping to harp on his goose egg for months and the Fins ruined it. Thanks a lot guys.

(Unfortunately, all of this totally guarantees that the Dolphins will beat New England next weekend.)

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Plenty to choose from, but I'll go with Santana Moss (WAS-WR), who had just four catches, but three of them were TDs. He also had 138 receiving yards. The last TD was the game-winner in overtime of the 36-30 win over Jacksonville. Amazing that the Jags can look so good on D against Indy and then allow 36 to Washington. That's why football is so darn popular. Just when you think you have something figured out, everything changes again.

GOAT OF THE DAY: Kurt Warner (ARZ-QB). It was clear all week that the guy was playing for his job and hen he comes out and goes 11 for 20 for 128 yards and gets pulled for rookie Matt Leinart (ARZ-QB). Coach Dennis Green announced that Leinart will start next week. Nice knowing you, Kurt.

NICE TO SEE YOU, L.J.: Hey, Larry Johnson (KC-RB)! Good to have you back! It's nice to finally see the No. 1 pick (in most leagues) put together a strong performance (101 rushing yards, 41 receiving yards, two TDs) in a whipping of San Fran (41-0). Next week at Arizona should be more of the same.

SPEAKING OF THE CHIEFS: Who's playing better right now, former Dolphin Damon Huard (KC-QB) or Culpepper? I'm as shocked as you are. Anyway, Huard is playing great in place of Trent Green (KC-QB), whose expected to miss at least one more game after a concussion a few weeks back. Huard finished 18 for 23 for 208 yards and two TDs. Very efficient.

EVERY YEAR: It seems like we always get to the point where the Patriots look done and we just assume they are going to get killed only to have them come up with a big win against a top opponent. This week was no different as they put a hurtin' on the Bengals and Doug Gabriel (NE-WR) may just be a decent enough wide receiver now that he's been working with Tom Brady (NE-QB) for a few weeks. Oh, and Laurence Maroney (NE-RB) is incredible. May turn out to be the best back from this draft down the line.

TEAM DEFENSE THAT CARRIED/KILLED YOU: Let's see, all the Chiefs D did against the 49ers was: Post a shutout, allow only 165 yards of offense, score a defensive TD, make 2 INTs, record 4 sacks and recover 2 fumbles. Yeah, I hope you didn't play against them.

KICKER THAT CARRIED/KILLED YOU: I feel like Jeff Wilkins (STL-K) is getting this award a lot, but he had 4 FGs (three over 40 yards) and three extra points. Yeah, I hope you didn't play against him, either.

MONDAY, MONDAY
Green Bay at Philadelphia, ESPN, 8:30
While it's clear why this was scheduled for prime time (Favre vs. McNabb), the best thing about it is we can be pretty sure the game will be over by halftime, so only those fantasy owners worried about their matchups will have to stay up late tonight.

Anyway, I'm interested to see if rookie Greg Jennings (GB-WR) impressive run will continue. He's got a chance to post some impressive numbers for a first-year receiver and it seems like there's chemistry between he and Favre. Can he cut it on the big stage? You have to assume the Packers will be behind and throwing a lot (Although that's what I expected out of the Jets Sunday against Indy and BOY was I wrong).
