Notes for Week 17

If you are finishing up your fantasy season with a championship matchup this weekend, good luck. As we saw with Indianapolis Saturday, who knows how many teams will play their stars and for how long now that a lot of the playoff picture is set. This is why most leagues are settled in Week 16.

Anyway, here's the news for this week. We'll have extras Friday with the column:

The NFL Injury Report will be updated HERE on Wednesday. Keep refreshing the page and it will eventually be updated.

Very suprising news out of Jacksonville has Byron Leftwich (JAX-QB) able to practice this week. But will he play?

Mike Anderson (DEN-RB) will not play this weekend.

I can't imagine we'll see much out of the Indy regulars, considering how little they played last week. Marvin Harrison (IND-WR) and Brandon Stokely (IND-WR) are already out for the game.

LaMont Jordan (OAK-RB) likely won't play this week.

Programming note: Regular column this week followed by regular reactions. We'll have the final column with awards on Jan. 6. I'll have blog updates through the playoffs with breakdowns of each game on Fridays. During the offseason, I'll post updates and links when they seem relevant. I'll also have all sorts of info in the time leading up to the NFL Draft, which I'm hoping to attend. In other words, it'll be worth checking in from time to time during the offseason.

Quick update

FYI-Marvin Harrison (IND-WR) is out for this weekend's game against Seattle. Brandon Stokley (IND-WR) will start in his place.

Roster/Injury Updates for Week 16

Kurt Warner (ARZ-QB) is out for the season. Too bad, he was playing pretty well there for a while.

Stephen Davis (CAR-RB) was placed on IR. Deshaun Foster (CAR-RB) is the man for the Panthers now.

Sam Gado (GB-RB) left Monday night's game with a torn MCL. He's out for the season and Tony Fisher (GB-RB) will start in his place.

Marvin Harrison (IND-WR) fractured a bone in his hand early in Sunday's loss to San Diego. He played through it Sunday, but must be considered a shaky fantasy start as the Colts have little to play for and should give him some rest before the playoffs. This could, however, make Brandon Stokley (IND-WR) more valuable.

I'll have the extras and the Injury Report on Friday morning.

Reactions for Week 15

REACTION 1: How many AFC teams could legitimately win the Super Bowl? I’ve got five: New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Denver and San Diego. Nevermind that Jacksonville and Cincinnati could beat any of those teams. That’s amazing.

REACTION 2: Down go the Colts! And I couldn’t be happier. No team should go undefeated in this era and I’m perfectly OK with that.

REACTION 3: Drew Brees (SD-QB) tried desperately to give that game away. Maybe he’s on the Indy payroll. He had two atrocious interceptions and held onto the ball for roughly 3.7 years on another play, which resulted in a fumble and Colts recovery.

REACTION 4: I’m not handing out awards for a few weeks, but the MVP for the second half is officially down to Tiki Barber (NYG-RB) and Larry Johnson (KC-RB). They are carrying teams through the postseason.

REACTION 5: There are many, many fantasy owners cursing out Chris Cooley (WAS-TE) today. The relatively mediocre TE had three touchdown catches in Sunday’s 35-7 win over Dallas and caused many a blowout in fantasy league playoffs. Ouch!

MONDAY NIGHT QUESTIONS
Green Bay at Baltimore (ABC, 9)

I can’t imagine why the Monday Night Football ratings are way down. Can’t we change the system somehow? Shouldn’t the Colts-Chargers, Patriots-Bucs or Redskins-Cowboys have been this week’s big game?

Which players will carry their fantasy teams this week? The Baltimore defense is starting to play well again, and that could spell trouble for Sam Gado (GB-RB0) owners.

Which Ravens running back (if any) will score points, Jamal Lewis (BAL-RB) or Chester Taylor (BAL-RB)?

Extras for Friday, Dec. 16

Out of all the games this weekend, I'm probably most looking forward to the Atlanta-Chicago game on Sunday night. One of the teams will be in a lot of trouble after the game and the other will establish itself as a contender. Plus, there are going to be many fantasy matchups decided by Michael Vick (ATL-QB), Warrick Dunn (ATL-RB), Alge Crumpler (ATL-TE), Thomas Jones (CHI-RB), Muhsin Muhammad (CHI-WR) and both team's defenses. Should be fun.

Also, Tom Brady (NE-QB) was downgraded from probable to questionable for Satruday's game against Tampa, but I haven't heard any expert say they expected him to miss the game.

Here's the breakdown for the NFL Injury Report. You can see the full report here.

OUT
Chris Perry (CIN-RB), Jay Fiedler (NYJ-QB), Curtis Martin (NYJ-RB), Marc Bulger (STL-QB), Byron Leftwich (JAX-QB)

DOUBTFUL
Cedric Benson (CHI-RB), Kevin Jones (DET-RB)

QUESTIONABLE
J.P. Losman (BUF-QB), Tom Brady (NE-QB), Corey Dillon (NE-RB), Kevin Faulk (NE-RB), Daniel Graham (NE-TE), Ben Watson (NE-TE), Domanick Davis (HOU-RB), Michael Gaines (CAR-TE), Derrick Blaylock (NYJ-RB), Reche Caldwell (SD-WR), LaDainian Tomlinson (SD-RB), Chris Brown (TEN-RB), Travis Henry (TEN-RB), Erron Kinney (TEN-TE), Steve McNair (TEN-QB), Ben Troupe (TEN-TE), Kevan Barlow (SF-RB), Arnaz Battle (SF-WR), Bubba Franks (GB-TE), Jamal Lewis (BAL-RB)

Rosters/Injury Updates for Week 15

Kerry Collins (OAK-QB) will start for the Raiders this week.

Michael Vick (ATL-QB) and Tom Brady (NE-QB) will both start this week despite leaving their respective wins with late injuries.

Looks like Marion Barber (DAL-RB) and Julius Jones (DAL-RB) have gone back to splitting carries. Same with Fred Taylor (JAX-RB) and Greg Jones (JAX-RB).

Michael Bennett (MIN-RB) has taken the starting job back from Mewelde Moore (MIN-
RB).

The NFL Injury Report will be updated HERE at some point today. Refresh to see if they've updated yet.

Reactions for Week 14

I spent Sunday in the snow in Orchard Park at the Patriots-Bills game, so reactions for this week are solely from that one.

REACTION 1: The Patriots are so much better with Corey Dillon (NE-RB) relatively healthy and in the backfield. You can see everything open up when Dillon is a play-action threat. Tom Brady (NE-QB) clearly has a better chance of throwing the ball downfield when Dillon is out there.

REACTION 2: If the Bills (4-9) have any chance at Matt Leinhart (USC-QB) or Vince Young (TEXAS-QB) in the first round of this year's NFL Draft, they have to pull the trigger. I know JP Losman (BUF-QB) hasn't exactly had a ton of NFL starts, but he does nothing particularly well and probably isn't a QB you can build around.

REACTION 3: The biggest cheer of the second half came in the fourth quarter when former Bill Doug Flutie (NE-QB) replaced Brady under center. The few remaining Bills fans in the stands had started a "We want Flutie!" chant late in the third and the Patriots fans joined them in it. You'd have thought Flutie was a college walk-on.

REACTION 4: Willis McGahee (BUF-RB) was positively manhandled by the New England run defense, which was fantastic all game. McGahee finished with three yards rushing on eight carries and the NE front seven is clearly becoming a dominant force. The secondary, however, is still shaky, but managed three interceptions off the previously mentioned Losman.

REACTION 5: Nice to see two of the workman-like Patriots catching TD passes. Troy Brown (NE-WR) and Christian Fauria (NE-TE) do a lot of the little things (blocking, returning kicks, etc.) but don't get a lot of print. They each scored on short passes in the second half.

MONDAY NIGHT QUESTIONS
New Orleans at Atlanta, (ABC, 9)

Can the Saints, who clearly seem to have packed it in, do anything against an Atlanta team that desperately needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive?

Will Michael Vick (ATL-QB) complete enough passes to make Alge Crumpler (ATL-TE), Michael Jenkins (ATL-WR) or any other Falcons receivers worthwhile fantasy scorers this week?

How much thunder (TJ Duckett (ATL_RB)) will we see among the lightning (Warrick Dunn (ATL-RB))?

Extras for Week 14

Just wanted to take a quick look at what to expect from those atrocious prime time games this weekend.

Sunday: Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers (ESPN, 8:30)
Loofk for Brett Favre (GB-QB) and Sam Gado (GB-RB) to put up big fantasy numbers against a Lions team that seems to have packed it in. The only Detroit player I would be very comfortable with starting is Roy Williams (DET-WR)

Monday: New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons (ABC, 9)
This Saints team just seems tired and the Falcons, who haven't played all that well in recent weeks, will surely get back on track. Expect Michael Vick (ATL-QB) and Warrick Dunn (ATL-RB) to have big-time games.

You can find the NFL Injury Report in full HERE. Here's a breakdown:

OUT
Erron Kinney (TEN-TE), Byron Leftwich (JAX-QB), Brian Westbrook (PHI-RB), Jay Fiedler (NYJ-QB), Marc Bulger (STL-QB)
DOUBTFUL
Cedric Benson (CHI-RB), Bubba Franks (GB-TE), Arnaz Battle (SF-WR), Neil Rackers (ARZ-K)
QUESTIONABLE
Reuben Droughns (CLE-RB), Jabar Gaffney (HOU-WR), Drew Bennett (TEN-WR), Chris Brown (TEN-RB), Steve McNair (TEN-QB), Marty Booker (MIA-WR), LaDainian Tomlinson (SD-RB), Corey Dillon (NE-RB0, Heath Evans (NE-RB), Kevin Faulk (NE-RB), David Givens (NE-WR), Daniel Graham (NE-TE), Kevan Barlow (SF-RB), Darrell Jackson (SEA-WR), Michael Gaines (CAR-TE)

Roster/Injury Updates for Week 14

SI-Brady
CNNSI.com

New England Patriots Tom Brady has been named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Here's Peter King on the choice.

In other news:

Braylon Edwards (CLE-WR) is done for the season after suffering a knee injury late in Sunday's loss to Jacksonville.

Marques Tuiasosopo (OAK-QB) may start for the struggling Kerry Collins (OAK-QB) Sunday.

Corey Dillon (NE-RB) played and scored a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Jets.

Latest word has Ben Roethlisberger (PIT-QB) continuing to play through the pain of a severely injured thumb on his throwing hand.

See you Friday for the Extras.

Reactions for Week 13

REACTION 1: I know they lost, but you have to wonder if Cleveland Browns fans will someday look back at Sunday remembering the first of many times Charlie Frye (CLE-QB) hooked up with Braylon Edwards (CLE-WR) for two touchdown passes. Frye finished with 226 yards passing and two scores (both to Edwards) in the Browns’ 20-14 loss to Jacksonville. Still, the Jaguars have a pretty good defense and Frye completed 65 percent of his passes (13-for-20) and had zero interceptions. Not bad.

REACTION 2: Speaking of Frye, he was one of four rookie quarterbacks to start Sunday, which is amazing. Along with Frye, No. 1 pick Alex Smith (SF-QB), seventh-round choice Ryan Fitzpatrick (STL-QB) and season-long starter Kyle Orton (CHI-QB) all got starting nods. Only Orton, whose defense may be the best in the NFL, won.

REACTION 3: It was nice to see the Cincinnati Bengals finally win a game against a good team. The Bengals held off an OK Pittsburgh Steelers squad featuring a quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, with a very injured thumb. Still, it’ll be a huge confidence boost for them come playoff time. With the loss, the Steelers are in big trouble. They’re going to have to play fantastic football for the final four weeks to get into the postseason.

REACTION 4: It’s nice to see that Drew Bledsoe (DAL-QB) is just as unreliable as he’s always been. In a big NFC East game against the New York Giants, Bledsoe made bad decision after bad decision and orchestrated one of the worst hurry-up offenses in NFL history. Simply incredible that Patriots fans were once wondering whether they should trade Bledsoe or Tom Brady (NE-QB) following the first Super Bowl win.

REACTION 5: Houston (1-11) narrowly escaped hurting their chances at Reggie Bush (USC-RB) but eventually pulled out the loss to the awful Baltimore Ravens 16-15 Sunday. God help them if Bush decides to stay for his senior year.

TANGENT REACTION: I’m very interested in where Bush will be drafted in next year’s fantasy drafts. Assuming he comes out after this season, isn’t he among the most highly-touted rookies since the explosion of fantasy football? Where does that land him? I suppose it depends on which awful team selects him, but he’s got to be a second or third round pick...Right?

MONDAY NIGHT QUESTIONS
Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles (ABC, 9 p.m.)

If Shaun Alexander (SEA-RB) has one of those 175-yard, three TD performances on national TV with Al Michaels and John Madden gushing, does he become the leading contender for the NFL’s MVP?

Can Brian Westbrook (PHI-RB) keep his team (and his fantasy teams) in this game?

Did anyone start Mike McMahon (PHI-QB) this week? If so, what’s wrong with your team? (I guess that’s more rhetorical than anything)

How much better did this game look six weeks ago? (I guess that’s rhetorical too)

Extras for Friday, Dec. 2

Here's the link to the Injury Report. Big news included below:

Here's the latest news:
Alex Smith (SF-QB) will start for the 49ers.
Jeff Garcia (DET-QB) will go for the Lions.
Ryan Fitzpatrick (STL-QB) is starting for the Rams.
Corey Dillon's (NE-QB) status is still unclear. Would be nice for his fantasy owners to get SOME use out of him this year.
Ben Roethlisberger (PIT-QB) and his sore thumb have to be a concern this week. Consider an alternative.
Fred Taylor (JAX-RB) will not play this weekend.
Neil Rackers (ARZ-K) is out with a leg injury he suffered in practice.

See you Monday with the reactions/MNF preview
