Twelve years after county government went the way of the dodo, its remnants are looking for ways to bring valuable services to residents of the region. It's a search for a will - as well as a way.

Yes, there still is a Hampshire County, and a Franklin County, but beyond providing shapes for a TV weatherman's map, the counties are relics, of a sort.

To the editor:

Many of the so-called Tea Party members and their conservative supporters in and out of Congress proclaim their affection for the wisdom of the Founding Fathers who wrote the Constitution and they demand a return to the original intent as found in the original Constitution. They do so primarily to show their distrust of the direction our government is heading.

UMass hockey fans showed their pride

I attended the losing UMass hockey effort on Saturday night at Boston College and I have to say I was impressed with the UMass fans that followed their team on the road to the Conte Forum.

AMHERST - A story Wednesday contained two incorrect figures in connection with Amherst's Proposition 2½ override. The dollar value of the override is $1.68 million. Also, the average taxpayer pays $6,457 between property taxes and water and sewer fees, according to information provided by the town's finance director.

On Hinckley Street in Northampton, a man walking his dog the other day noticed an approaching car weaving from side to side. Alarmed, he stepped out of the way. The driver stopped when she drew close to him to tell him she wasn't impaired - she was just steering around potholes.
