Matt Vautour: Observations following UMass’ 120-71 exhibition win over AIC

Thursday, October 30, 2014

AMHERST On one hand, UMass’ 120-71 exhibition win over American International came against a Division II team that finished 9-19 last year, so it’s hard to put much stock in the dominating performance. On the other hand, the Minutemen have had some anxious moments in games like these against teams of similar ilk. Last year, UMass coach Derek Kellogg had to re-insert his starters against AIC when the game got too close. Thursday’s game was never in doubt. There was plenty of curiosity going into the game with many new players and returning players in new roles. The crowd got more than they paid for …

Freshman goalie Henry Dill off to fast start for UMass hockey team

Thursday, October 30, 2014

AMHERST — Henry Dill isn’t UMass’ No. 1 goalie. Not yet anyway. It’s too early in the season for coach John Micheletto to officially name anyone his No. 1 guy going forward. But three games into his collegiate career, Dill looks like the type of goalie who could someday earn that distinction. With good reason, it was fellow freshman Patrick Lee’s game-winning goal …

Matt Vautour: Midseason firing of Buffalo coach an odd move

Monday, October 13, 2014

Maybe there’s another shoe to drop. Maybe Buffalo found out that football coach Jeff Quinn, whom it fired Monday, was secretly selling Todd Gurley’s autograph, smuggling prescription drugs from Canada, eating chicken wings without sauce or trying to …

Matt Vautour: Buried on depth chart, tailback Lorenzo Woodley breaks through for UMass

Sunday, October 12, 2014

KENT, Ohio The days when tailback Lorenzo Woodley was supposed to be a cornerstone for the UMass football team had started to feel like a long time ago. As a freshman in 2013, injuries prevented him from developing any kind of consistency. As a sophomore, at one point …

Notebook: Backup punter Logan Laurent gives UMass a leg up in place-kicking game

Saturday, October 11, 2014

KENT, Ohio — Logan Laurent is listed on the UMass roster as a punter, but he always hoped to eventually work his way back into the place-kicking mix. With former starter Blake Lucas struggling to find consistency and backup Matthew Wylie battling an injury, UMass coach Mark Whipple …

Former UMass center Lari Ketner finds love, peace before death

Friday, October 10, 2014

There was peace in Lari Ketner’s voice I didn’t recognize when I spoke to him in March. It had been almost 15 years since I last interviewed him. His UMass basketball career ended in 1999, but in his …
