UMass forward Sampson Carter misses practice, expected to play Thursday

AMHERST — University of Massachusetts junior forward Sampson Carter missed practice Monday, but coach Derek Kellogg expected him to be available for Thursday’s 9 p.m. game at Saint Louis.

Carter was sidelined after undergoing periodic treatment for the hip injury that forced him to take a medical redshirt last season. He is expected to practice Tuesday or Wednesday.

“I think he’ll be able to go,” said Kellogg, who is prevented by medical privacy laws from going into specifics on the treatment.

Carter is averaging 5.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game. UMass’ seven-game winning streak coincides with Carter joining the starting lineup.

If Carter is sideline or slowed against Saint Louis, sophomores Cady Lalanne and Maxie Esho figure to get extra minutes.

MORE BIG EAST RUMORS — ESPN’s Andy Katz reported Monday that the remaining Big East football teams have discussed adding the Minutemen.

“The remaining Big East athletic directors will meet in Dallas on Jan. 11 to discuss their latest moves, including the update on the television negotiations,” Katz wrote in an ESPN.com story. “Tulsa and UMass have been discussed as possible additions if the Big East decides to expand, according to multiple sources.”

REVENGE ON THEIR MINDS — Saint Louis senior forward Cody Ellis told Scout.com that he was looking forward to playing UMass Thursday. The Minutemen won 72-59 at the Mullins Center last season.

“They made us look silly at their place last year,” Ellis said. “We have some redemption for them guys.”
