UMass field hockey falls to Syracuse in NCAA tournament
The University of Massachusetts field hockey team couldn’t carry the momentum of a 10-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament, and fell 4-2 to Syracuse in the first round at Penn State University.
UMass upset then No. 1-ranked Syracuse earlier in the season 1-0.
Thando Zono scored twice for UMass (15-9). Sam Carlino made 14 saves in net.
Women’s basketball
UMass 83, Kent St 53 — The Minutewomen rolled in their season opener Saturday at the Mullins Center.
Jasmine Watson had 21 points and became the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 points. Watson added eight rebounds, four blocks, four steals and three assists in the game.
Emily Mital scored a career-high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Women’s soccer
Lasell 3, Amherst 1 — The Lord Jeffs’ season came to a close after a home loss to Lasell Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Amanda Brisco scored a late goal for Amherst (13-2-2).
Holly Burwick made three saves in net.
Men’s soccer
Amherst 4, Dickinson 0 — Spencer Noon scored twice as the Jeffs pitched the shutout in the NCAA Division III tournament second round Sunday in Amherst.
Greg Singer added a goal and an assist for the Jeffs. Max Fikke also scored.
Thomas Bull made two saves.
Amherst (16-0-2) will play Swarthmore Saturday in San Antonio.
Women’s cross country
Amherst College senior and Amherst native Keri Lambert placed first in 20 minutes, 48.94 seconds to win the Division III New England championship at Westfield State on Saturday.
The Lord Jeffs finished fifth out of 51 teams.
Tufts freshman and Amherst native Audrey Gould placed 19th (22:12.61) for the sixth-place Jumbos.
Men’s cross country
Andrew Erskine placed 29th (25:32.76) to lead Amherst, which placed 11th at the Division III New England championship at Westfield State on Saturday.
