Tuesday’s high schools: Hopkins Academy girls soccer staves off elimination
The Hopkins Academy girls soccer team won its second straight elimination game on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Holyoke Catholic 2-1 in Chicopee.
Mary Cook scored a goal and set up Kayla Jacque on the game winner for the Golden Hawks (7-8-2, 3-2-2 Pioneer South), who must beat Smith Academy at home on Friday to make the tournament.
Kate Sullivan stopped 12 shots in the win.
Kylee Windyka scored for the Gaels (8-6-3, 2-3-2 Pioneer South) on an assist from Adelina Martins.
Katie Klejna made seven saves for Catholic.
Smith Academy 4, Ware 0 — Mia Ellis and Hannah Rickert each had a goal and an assist as the Falcons (11-4-2, 5-1 Pioneer South) won at home.
Sarah Pawloski also scored from McKenzie Wilson, while Smith also benefitted from an own goal.
Keeper Brooke Pashek made seven saves for a shutout.
Athol 1, Gateway Regional 0 — Sarah Otterbeck made two saves, but the Gators (10-3-3) lost an independent home matchup.
Amherst Regional 1, Holyoke 1 — Sage DeChiara scored on an Emma Robson assist in the home draw for the Hurricanes (8-5-4, 2-3-2 Central).
Keeper Becca Carkhuff made eight saves for Amherst.
Northampton 2, Westfield 0 — The Blue Devils (3-13-1, 3-5 Moriarty) celebrated their senior night with a pair of second-half goals and a victory.
Casey Intrator (assist) opened the scoring on a penalty kick and Rowan Steere added the insurance tally.
Jon Brodeur made seven stops in the shutout.
Hampshire 5, Hoosac 0 — Brendan Bzdel contributed five points (three goals, two assists) to give the Raiders (9-0-5) an independent road win.
Bryan Brasil scored the last two Raiders goals and added an assist. Kevin Brasil and Reagan Bishop had one assist each.
Ben Preston and Nick O’Hare shared the shutout with five combined saves.
McCann Tech 3, Smith Vocational 0 — Will Ingram made six saves in a road loss for the Vikings (3-10-3, 3-4 Tri-County North).
Greenfield 3, Smith Vocational 0 — The Vikings (0-16) fell on the road by scores of 25-11, 25-4, 25-12.
Bailee Richardson played well for Smith Voke with four digs and eight assists, and Shelby Cormier added two digs and four assists.
Holyoke 3, South Hadley 2 — The Tigers (7-10) fell at home, 23-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-13.
Rachel Dizek had 15 assists, four digs, three kills for South Hadley. Sarah LaRochelle had eight kills, seven digs and four blocks, while Kelly Pouliot added eight kills four digs.
