Wednesday’s high schools: Madeline Spencer-Orrell tosses second no-hitter for Smith Vocational

Sophomore Madeline Spencer-Orrell tossed her second no-hitter of the season as the Smith Vocational softball team defeated Commerce 8-2 in a home game called in the sixth inning due to rain.

Spencer-Orrell, who had a five-inning no-hitter against Dean Tech in the season opener, struck out six and walked four for the Vikings (6-7). She also had two of the team’s four hits and scored a run.

Riley Lacaprucia added an RBI triple and scored a run, while Serita Whitney and Natasha Cintron each had a hit, an RBI and scored a run.

Belchertown 10, Ludlow 1 (5) — Samantha Manitsas tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts in the rain-shortened game as the Orioles (10-4, 4-0 Suburban) secured a tournament berth.

Hannah Flink went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Belchertown. Erica Boileau (three RBIs), Erinne Dull (two runs) and Erin Reed-Coates (RBI) had two hits apiece, while Mackenzie Yelle drove in two and scored one and Sarah Woodcock tripled home a pair.

Southwick 4, Smith Academy 3 — The Falcons (6-7) cut an early four-run deficit to one, but rain ended any their comeback hopes after five innings.

Moira Pitrat, Cassidy Snyder and Brooke Pashek each had a hit and an RBI.

Olivia Cavanaugh and Kayla Miastkowski added one hit apiece in the loss.


Smith Academy 5, Pioneer Christian 2 (5) — With the game tied 2-2, Keith Natale scored the eventual game-winning run on the back end of a double steal for the Falcons (12-3) at home.

Natale (two runs) and Christian Smiarowski (run) had consecutive singles to start the bottom of the fourth. Those were the only two hits for Smith.

Kevin Banas picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly, while Cam Woodward and Jojo Afflitto scored a run apiece.

Nick April allowed one earned run on two hits with six strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

Girls lacrosse

Belchertown 13, Chicopee Comp 2 — Kate Bowers and Brea Allen each scored three goals as the Orioles (10-3-1) won on the road to clinch a postseason berth for the second straight season.

Kayla Panek picked up four assists to go with a goal for Belchertown. Kat Lowe (two assists) and Emma Jopson had two goals apiece, while Meg Foley (assist) and Tiffany Anderson added a tally each and Emma Cyr had an assist.

Abbey Norden (seven saves) and Kailey Pacheco (four) each played a half in goal.

Boys lacrosse

Northampton 5, East Longmeadow 4 — Will Lombardi scored a pair of goals as the Blue Devils (7-6) held on at home.

Cody Malone (one assist), Ben Davis and Jared Yarde each scored once.

Tyler Walsh made 18 saves.

Prep schools Girls lacrosse

Williston 16, Pomfret School 1 — Karly Simpson of South Hadley scored six goals and had two assists as the Wildcats (10-0) remained undefeated with a win at home.

Maggie Fitzgerald added five goals, while Madelle Hatch (two assists) and Taylor Putasky had two each.

Kirstyn Kruse scored once.

Janelle Parker made eight saves.

Girls water polo

Williston 19, Hotchkiss 2 — Maddy Stern of Northampton scored nine goals as the Wildcats won in Lakeville, Conn.

Samantha Frye added three goals, while Persis Ticknor-Swanson of Easthampton and Leeanna Albanese scored twice apiece.

Mary McCarthy and Emily Grussing had one goal each.

Girls golf

Williston 4, Miss Porter’s 1 — The Wildcats improved to 5-4-3 with the win.
