Heavy traffic possible for basketball games in Amherst tonight

AMHERST — Traffic is expected to be heavy in and around the University of Massachusetts campus tonight as three basketball games are played at two venues.

“There will be heavier traffic. Plan accordingly and be patient,” said UMass spokesman Daniel Fitzgibbons.

Two Division 2 high school girls basketball games are taking place at Curry Hicks Cage, with the first tipping off at 6 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m.

Also a large crowd is anticipated for the UMass men’s basketball game against Butler University at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m., with the possibility of the first sellout in several years.

Fitzgibbons said UMass police officers will be stationed on Commonwealth Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue to direct traffic, but the university is not taking any unusual steps. Most employees will already be off campus by the time spectators arrive for the games, and parking is available in most lots after 5 p.m.
