Amherst Regional sophomore Taj-Amir Torres wins Division 2 state title in 55-meter dash

Amherst Regional’s Taj-Amir Torres dominated the field in the 55-meter dash at the state Division 2 Indoor Track and Field championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sunday.

“It felt really good. I worked hard this week.” Torres said of the win. “I have some fast teammates and they pushed me hard in practice.”

Torres, a sophomore, finished first in a blistering 6.48 seconds, missing the record by three-tenths of a second.

“I didn’t think about the record. I just went out and ran as fast as I could,” said Torres, who won last week’s PVIAC title race in 6.49 seconds. “I’ll try to get it next year.”

The Hurricanes boys placed seventh overall with 21 points.

Gabe Fishman added a second place performance in the 1000-meter run (2:34.75). Amherst’s Ryan Stender took sixth in the two-mile run (9:49.31).

Reading earned first with 39 points, followed by Mansfield with 37 and North Attleborough with 33.

The Amherst girls took 22nd overall in the team competition with a total of six points.

Kanya Brown paced the Hurricanes with a fifth-place finish in the 55-meter dash (7:54).

Anna Kaplan placed seventh in the mile run (5:20.19) for Amherst.
