South Hadley hockey ices St. Mary’s

The four-time Western Massachusetts Division 3A champion South Hadley hockey team got off to a good start Saturday.

The Tigers opened their season with a 5-0 win over St. Mary’s.

South Hadley led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second.

Beau Kass scored twice, while Joe Whalen (assist), Jake Knowles and Evan Sullivan (two assists) each had one goal. Tim Sweeney had three assists and Devin Hoagland stopped 19 shots.

Turners Falls 4, Amherst 2 — Cody Booska, Tim McMahon, Brandon Lenois and Trevor Peduzzi each had one goal and one assist as the Indians (2-0) won Saturday.

Tim Atkins had one assist, while Will Miller made 27 saves.

Luke Allen and Jack Rees each scored, while Jason Sloat, Joe Gazaille and Alex Rivers each had one save for the Hurricanes (0-1). Eddie Sablak made 25 saves.

Agawam 8, Easthampton 2
— Zach Lewis and Rob Carmel each scored, while Jacob Opalanek, Dave York, Mike Grise and Tim Pfau each had one assist for the Eagles Saturday.

Chris Pause (10 saves) and Matt Sarafin (24 saves) split time in net.

Williston 42, Suffield 38
— Natalia Ovando scored 15 points and Maranie Harris-Kuiper added 14 as the Wildcats (3-0) beat Suffield Saturday for the first time since Dec. 11, 2004.

Sarah Marion of Granby added six points.

Girls hockey
Williston 3, Pomfret 2
— Christina Zalewski (three goals) scored the game-winning goal with 1:29 left in the game as the Wildcats won at home Saturday.

Miranda Gohh made 21 saves, while Maddie Hatch had two assists in the win.

St. Mary’s 6, Williston 1
— Haoshu Xu won her match but the Wildcats (0-3) fell at home Saturday.
