Division 1 boys soccer: Amherst moves on to semis, Northampton falls to state champ Ludlow

One easy win and the Amherst Regional boys soccer team is off to the semifinal round.

The Hurricanes controlled the ball from the start and overwhelmed Sci-Tech 6-0 Monday in the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament quarterfinal round in Amherst.

“We’ve been playing well,” Hurricanes coach Michael Rudd said. “We played as I expected.”

Second-seed Amherst (9-2-5) will play No. 3 West Springfield (10-2-7) at a date and time yet to be determined. Amherst beat the Terriers 2-1 at home on Oct. 26. West Side beat East Longmeadow 3-1 in the other quarterfinal.

The ’Canes led 2-0 at halftime then pulled away from the Cybercats (16-2-0) in front of a large home crowd.

“The objective has been to possess and when we possess we play well,” Rudd said. “Tonight we possessed the ball as we should. It made everything much easier.”

Jaimon Olmstead scored off a corner kick by Ian Radson to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Eric Gooden then laced a shot into the upper corner from 20 yards out for a 2-0 edge.

Adrian Haughton, Gooden, Nick Johnson and Alex LaRaja added second-half goals.

Cody Baglow had two assists, while Erik Schleeweis had one. Curtis Barnes made three saves in the shutout.

Ludlow 2, Northampton 1 — Elliot Weiss scored an unassisted goal to bring the No. 8 Blue Devils within a goal with a minute left, but they couldn’t notch the equalizer and fell to the defended state champion and top-seeded Lions on the road in the Division 1 quarterfinals.

Jack Haller made four saves for Hamp, which finished its season at 7-8-2. It was the final high school game for eight Blue Devil seniors: Haller, Weiss, Sam Delisle, Zach Goodwin-Boyd, Dan Esrick, Jay Wright, Jonah Hahn, Jordan Maurer, Andrew Fleming, Tommy Savarese and Elias Neijens.
