The sixth goal came from Tyler Szymkowicz and after, he and his teammates, again, trotted humbly back to their positions for the ensuing play.

Each goal in between followed this pattern of modesty, as Hopkins Academy trounced Easthampton 6-0 on Thursday, in the latest blowout victory for the Golden Hawks.

There was no need to celebrate for a Hopkins (6-0) team that has spent the start of the season dominating the opposition. Through the first six games, the Golden Hawks have scored 29 goals and allowed zero.

“We try to be mature about it, we don’t want to be cocky about anything,” said Szymkowicz, a junior forward.

The message from Hopkins coach Justin Campbell — act like you’ve been there before.

“I think it’s definitely something we’ve tried to instill in the team over the last few years,” Campbell said. “We’re happy to score the goal, but we want to come back and try to do it again.”

The early success is not a new phenomenon for the Golden Hawks. Last season, they finished 16-2-2 and earned a trip to the Western Massachusetts Division 3 finals, where they fell to Lenox 2-1. In 2010, they went 12-3-4 and advanced to the WMass quarterfinals.

“This is an experienced team and a veteran team and I think they understand that it’s one step in a long season,” Campbell said.

Some of the highlights in the early part of Hopkins’ season include a 5-0 season-opening win against Holyoke Catholic, a 9-0 trouncing of Mahar in Orange, another 5-0 victory against Mohawk, and Thursday’s win against Easthampton.

Despite the lopsided nature of many of the Golden Hawks’ games, Campbell downplayed his team’s play.

“Some games have looked a little more lopsided only because that day we finished our chances and the other team didn’t,” Campbell said.

Szymkowicz provided the fireworks for Hopkins on Thursday as he completed a hat trick and dished out a pair of assists. Szymkowicz sliced through the defense at will as he was rarely dispossessed and controlled the game from his forward position. He now leads the team in goals (eight) and assists (10).

The highlight of the game occurred in the 16th minute of the first half. The play developed on the foot of junior forward Paul Delamy, who controlled the ball in Easthampton’s defensive zone. With at least two defenders back and only Szymkowicz forward, it appeared that Delamy had no where to pass. But instead of slowing the ball and waiting for reinforcements, Delamy lofted a soft pass over the top of the defense in the direction of a sprinting Szymkowicz. Szymkowicz easily beat the two defenders draped to his side and lightly tapped the ball past goalie Brady Parker, who had vacated his net in pursuit of the ball.

“That was a great pass by Paul,” Szymkowicz said. “I just tried to do what I could with it.”

The Golden Hawks pressured Easthampton’s defense as they launched 26 shots, 10 of which were saved by Parker. On the other hand, Hopkins goalie Ben Pitta was rarely challenged as he made just three saves.

“We were able to convert on some crosses that we hadn’t necessarily done in earlier games, and defensively we rotated well and communicated well, which is key to our success.”

Delaney, a junior midfielder, scored a pair of goals, while senior forward Tim Knightly added a goal. Delamy tallied his first two assists of the season.

Hopkins looks to add to its perfect record as it hosts Granby at 3:30 p.m. today.
