Tuesday’s local colleges: Amherst native Syry Mitchell scores game-winner for Mount Holyoke soccer

Syry Mitchell of Amherst scored the game-winning goal for the Mount Holyoke women’s soccer team in its 2-0 victory over Bay Path College in South Hadley.

Ashleigh Hartsock had the insurance tally for the Lyons (4-3). Kara Singleton picked up an assist, and Alyssa Tabrisky made one save.

Field hockey

Amherst 8, Springfield 2 — Madeline Tank scored a career-high four goals as the No. 14 Jeffs (3-2) rolled to the home victory.

Katie Paolano (assist), Ellie Andersen, Kerry Fusco and Sarah Culhane added a tally apiece for Amherst. Krista Zsitvay had three assists, while Annie Turnbull chipped in with one assist.

Rachel Tannenbaum made three saves for the Jeffs.

Mount Holyoke 1, Wesleyan 0 — Sophomore midfielder Julia Bell had the game’s lone tally as the No. 20 Lyons (8-0) remained perfect with the home win.

Liz DiCesare stopped seven shots in the victory for Mount Holyoke, which tied the program record for consecutive wins.

Women’s volleyball

Coast Guard 3, Smith 2 — The Pioneers (8-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) rallied from two games down to force a fifth before losing, 25-18, 25-12, 26-24, 25-23, 15-11 at New London, Conn.

Rosa Drummond led Smith with 18 kills, while Paige Sarlandt had 12 kills and Mei-Li Smith added 10 kills and 15 digs. Julie Voorhees had a team-high 20 digs and Bethany Ashworth a team-best 41 assists and 11 digs.

MIT 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Athena Donta of Hadley had 13 digs and a pair of aces for the Lyons (8-3, 0-3 NEWMAC), who were swept on the road, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22.

Senior Martina Kneifel paced Mount Holyoke with 21 digs and eight kills. Kaleen Iwema finished with 21 digs and five kills.

Women’s tennis

Worcester State 7, Salem State 2 — Hillary Gustafson of Belchertown dropped her No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-4 in the loss for the Vikings (1-4, 0-1 Little East).

Mount Holyoke 9, Smith 0 — The Lyons (4-4, 2-3 NEWMAC) evened their record with a home sweep over the Pioneers (0-4, 0-4).
