Wednesday’s colleges: Kayla Sypek leads Johnson & Wales over twin sister Sarah, Westfield State

Westhampton twins Kayla and Sarah Sypek faced off in college Wednesday.

Kayla, a junior at Johnson & Wales, scored the game-winning goal in the 38th minute as the Wildcats beat host Westfield State 1-0.

Sarah Sypek had a chance at the equalizer in the closing seconds but goalie Alex Rose beat her to the ball on a breakaway.

Simmons 4, Smith College 0 — Alanna Lynch and Shannon Saywell combined for nine saves in the road loss.

Men’s soccer

Hartford 1, UMass 0 — Nick Ruiz made two saves in goal but he couldn’t stop Jeff Tryon’s game winner in the 71st minute as the Minutemen (0-4-1) fell at Rudd Field.

Amherst 4, Curry 1 — Will Poss, Ben Norton, Gabriel Wirz and Andrew Orozco each had a goal as the Lord Jeffs (3-1) won on the road.

Cameron Bean, Tommy Haskel, Mikey Hoeksema and Max Fikke each had one assist, while Thomas Bull made five saves.

Field hockey

Lasell 3, Wheaton 2 — Ellie Massengill, of Amherst, made five saves but the Lyons fell in Norton.

Women’s volleyball

Smith College 3, Western Connecticut State 2 — Rosa Drummond and Kristi Hammond each had 11 kills, while Bethany Ashworth had 36 assists and Mei-Li Smith 16 digs for the Pioneers (5-0).
