Wednesday’s colleges: Amherst College softball sweeps doubleheader with Westfield State
The Amherst College softball team’s pitching depth was too much for Westfield State Wednesday.
Theresa Kelley struck out 12 in a 4-1 and Arielle Doering took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of a 5-3 victory as the Lord Jeffs swept a doubleheader in Amherst.
Kelley walked one and allowed four hits in the complete game.
Doering struck out eight, walked two and allowed three hits in her complete game.
Eighth different players had a hit in Game 1. Caroline Sealander had two hits and one RBI, while Kelley had two RBIs to help her own cause.
Reilly Horan (two runs) was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs in Game 2. Brianna Cook had a pinch-hit, two-run double, while Kelsey Ayers added two hits.
Northeastern 3, UMass 1 — Ryan Cusick had two hits, while Nik Campero and Jeff Cavanaro each had one but the Minutemen (3-15) fell in Brookline.
Conor LeBlanc struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs on six hits over 71∕3 innings for the loss.
Smith College 9, Lesley 0 — The Pioneers (3-11) had three 6-0, 6-0 singles wins and three 8-0 doubles victories as they cruised at home.
