Colleges: Amherst junior guard Aaron Toomey named national player of the year in Division III

Amherst College junior guard Aaron Toomey was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III Player of the Year on Monday.

He was one of two juniors to be named a first-team All-American by the NABC. Toomey was already named the Northeast District Player of the Year and NESCAC Player of the Year.

He’s the second Lord Jeff to earn player of the year honors joining Andrew Olson, who won the award in 2008 and shared it in 2007. Toomey’s 1,400 career points are No. 9 on Amherst’s career list. He leads the Jeffs with 17.4 points per game.

Toomey is approaching the end of a stellar season, posting career-high averages in several offensive categories, including field-goal percentage (.440), 3-point shooting percentage (.427) and assists per game (4.9).

He has led the team in scoring 10 times and twice tied a career-high with 34 points against Colby on Jan. 19 and RIC on Jan. 29.

He dished out a personal-best 12 assists against Curry in November.

He is third in the NESCAC in assists per game and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4).

For the third consecutive year, one the nation’s highest honorees has called LeFrak Gym home. Caroline Stedman (2012) and Jaci Daigneault (2011) were named women’s player of the year after their senior seasons.

Amherst coach Dave Hixon is also a finalist for the Glenn Robinson Award, which is given to the Division III Coach of the Year.

Amherst plays Mary Hardin-Baylor in the Division III national championship game at Philips Arena in Atlanta on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
