Indra Rapinchuk-Souccar: ‘Worst nightmare’ headline bad choice of words
To the editor:
I am a 15-year-old high school student and was extremely disappointed in the Gazette when I received the paper after returning from school the other day. I was stunned and appalled by the language used in a front-page headline about “UMass’ worst nightmare.” I believe the paper made a very poor choice and should take a step back and gain perspective as well as compassion for greater events than the loss of a football game.
From personal experience, the death of anyone, especially a teenager, is much larger than the loss of any game. To look through the paper to find that a UMass student had died on campus the same weekend stirred up anger as well as extreme disbelief. I hope this letter will help you and your staff take a step back, think and acknowledge your poor choice and priorities.
