Wednesday’s high school tennis, track: Longmeadow edges Amherst Regional 3-2 in girls tennis

The likely Western Massachusetts Division 1 girls tennis finalists met at Amherst Regional Middle School Wednesday.

It was the defending champion Longmeadow which pulled out a 3-2 victory over 2012 runner-up Amherst.

The team’s split their regular season matches. The Hurricanes were missing five starters when they beat the Lancers, who were missing two starters, on April 15.

On Wednesday, Amherst’s top doubles team did not play, while Longmeadow fielded its top seven, according to Amherst coach C.J. Holt.

“It’s going to be a 3-2 match when the postseason comes around,” Holt said. “It’s a matter of who plays better at doubles that day. We’re close with them at doubles.”

The McCann sisters won for the Hurricanes (8-1). Nicole McCann beat Lisa Calsasola 6-1, 6-1 at first singles. Allison McCann beat Suzanne Elfman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

The two teams have met in the last four sectional championships. The series is tied 2-2.
