Ellis Cooper, Franklin Pierce fall in Division II Elite 8
Ellis Cooper and the Franklin Pierce men’s basketball team fell 78-65 to Metropolitan State of Denver Thursday, in the NCAA Division II Tournament Elite Eight in Louisville, Ky.
The Ravens finished 24-8.
The Roadrunners (30-2) will face West Liberty (33-1) on Saturday in the national semifinals.
A 3-pointer by Ryen Vilmont with 5 minutes, 8 seconds left gave the Ravens a 63-62 lead. The Roadrunners though closed the game on a 16-2 run.
Franklin Pierce had opportunities down the stretch. Trailing 66-63, Cooper missed a jumper. The junior stole the ball back but then missed a layup.
Cooper also missed two free throws just before Metro State extended the lead to 68-63 with 2:33 left.
Metro led 70-65 when Vilmont committed a turnover. The Roadrunners then buried a 3 with 1:23 lead to push the lead to eight.
Cooper, a 6-foot-3 forward from Northampton, finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal.
He was recently named to Second-Team All-East Region.
MIT 6, Amherst 2 — The Lord Jeffs (8-5) were held to five hits in the loss in Cambridge.
Louis Hunt, Taiki Kasuga, Conner Gunn, Nolan Stewart and Dan Pillitteri each had a hit for Amherst.
Amherst native Fred Shepard took the loss. Shepard struck out seven, walked two and allowed one earned run on four hits over six innings.
Kennesaw State 4, Stetson 0 — Freshman lefty Garrison Banas of Hadley walked two, struck out one and allowed one hit over 11∕3 innings of relief but the Hatters (12-14, 1-3 Atlantic Sun) fell at home in Deland, Fla.
