Tuesday’s colleges: Freshman sparks Smith College soccer with double overtime winner
Freshman Lily Eriksen scored her first career goal with 3 minutes, 8 seconds remaining in double overtime as the Smith College soccer team defeated Coast Guard 2-1 in Northampton Tuesday.
Jordan Houston scored her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute to give the Pioneers (5-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) a 1-0 lead.
Caroline Eastman tied the game in the 71st minute for the Bears (1-8, 0-4).
Cody Norris made eight saves in the victory.
WPI 1, Mount Holyoke 0 — Mackenzie Randall made two saves but the Lyons (2-7-1, 1-3-0 NEWMAC) fell at home.
Field hockey
Trinity 1, Amherst College 0 (OT) — The 16th-ranked Bantams (7-1, 6-1 NESCAC) scored on a penalty stroke with eight seconds remaining in overtime to pull out the win in Amherst.
Rachel Tannenbaum made five saves for the 14th-ranked Lord Jeffs (5-3, 2-3).
UMass Dartmouth 4, Eastern Connecticut State 0 — Erica Allan of Amherst scored two goals as the Corsairs (7-3, 6-0 Little East) won in Mansfield, Conn.
WPI 1, Mount Holyoke 0 — Anne O’Bryne made six saves but the Lyons (5-4, 2-1 NEWMAC) on the road.
Women’s volleyball
Springfield 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Stephany Yang had 12 assists and 10 digs but the Lyons (3-7, 0-5 NEWMAC) fell 25-11, 25-8, 25-14 at home.
WPI 3, Smith College 2 — Mei-Li Smith finished with 12 kills, 14 assists and 32 digs, while Rosa Drummond had 12 kills and 18 digs but the Pioneers (5-7, 2-3 NEWMAC) fell 25-17, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25, 16-18 at home.
Women’s tennis
Mount Holyoke 6, Clark 3 — The Lyons (3-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) won five of six singles matches to cruise in South Hadley.
