Weekend college recaps: UMass men’s lacrosse cuts down Ohio State in overtime
The University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse improved to 2-0 on the season Sunday night with a 12-11 overtime victory over Ohio State in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic, in Jacksonville, Fla.
UMass took a timeout with about two minutes left in the game. Out of the break, Grant Whiteway put a shot on OSU goalie Greg Dutton, but Dutton made the stop.
UMass attack Nick Mariano picked up the ground ball and after running time off the clock, beat Dutton with seven seconds left for the win.
Mariano finished with four goals, while Matt Whippen added three and Jeff George two.
Connor Mooney, Andrew Sokol and Ryan Izzo each had one goal. Zach Oliveri made 13 saves in the win.
Amherst 79, Middlebury 41 — Ali Doswell had 20 points, while Marley Giddins and Haley Zwecker each scored 11 points as the 10th-ranked Lord Jeffs won at home Saturday.
Mount Holyoke 68, Emerson College 60 — Kate Karraker had 24 points and Amber Legare (26 rebounds) added 20 as the Lyons won on Saturday.
George Washington 78, UMass 54 — Kim Pierre-Louis and Kiara Bomben scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Minutewomen fell on the road Saturday.
Smith College 59, Coast Guard 57 — Rosa Drummond hit the first of two free throws with just under a minute left in the game to give the Pioneers a two-point lead and a victory on senior night against Coast Guard Saturday. Drummond scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.
Amherst 84, Middlebury 67 — Tom Killian (18 points) and Connor Green (15) each reached double digits as the Lord Jeffs won at home Sunday.
Worcester State 62, Westfield State 58 — Grant Cooper (Northampton) had 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career but the Owls (13-10) fell on the road Saturday.
Brendan Rios (Easthampton) had 24 points in the win.
UMass 7, UConn 5 — The Minutewomen (2-0) scored four goals in the first half to secure a victory at UConn on Saturday.
Katie Ferris had two goals and two assists in the win.
Men’s Ice Hockey
Northeastern 5, UMass 4 — Michael Pereira, Ben Ballacher, Conor Sheary and Zack LaRue each scored but the Minutemen (8-19-4, 4-11-3 Hockey East) fell at home Saturday.
Tufts 1, Amherst 1 (OT) — Jake Turrin scored for the Lord Jeffs in their tie at home on Sunday. On Saturday, Topher Flanagan scored for Amherst in a 1-1 tie with Connecticut College.
Amherst 2, Trinity 2 (OT) — Erin Martin and Sara Culhane each scored as the Lord Jeffs won at home Saturday.
NESCAC Championships — Amherst’s Sarah Conklin (50 and 100 butterfly), Emily Hyde (100 and 200 breaststroke) and Lizzy Linsmayer (1-meter dive) each placed first this weekend.
