AMHERST — When games resume at the Amherst Regional High School softball diamond next spring, a new electronic scoreboard will be in place, honoring the memory of a longtime supporter of youth athletics in town.
Using money raised by the family and friends of Victor Keedy Jr. through memorial softball tournaments the last two years, the Hurricane Boosters Club is purchasing the new scoreboard and working with town employees and committees to get it installed.
Keedy, who died in May 2010, was a coach of both softball and baseball teams.

A scoring error apparently cost the Amherst Regional softball team a chance at the state Division 1 championship last month. The Hurricanes walked off Rockwood Field at Worcester State University that evening with the state runner-up trophy, but the game's lone run apparently was incorrectly allowed due to an appeal that resulted in a force out. MIAA media spokesman Paul Wetzel was contacted Tuesday and said that he had not heard about the situation, but that such an error could not be appealed now by the Hurricanes.

WORCESTER
In the final and biggest stage of her brilliant high school career, Amherst Regional senior Emma Mendoker delivered one last masterpiece. The team's gut-wrenching 1-0 loss in the state Division 1 championship game Saturday dampened the mood, of course, even as Mendoker was given flowers and congratulations for striking out her 1,000th career batter during the post-game. But the state Gatorade Player of the Year still bade farewell to the Hurricanes' program with one last epic performance before heading to Division I East Carolina University in the fall.

AMHERST - Thursday marked a rare occasion of a sequel nearly matching the brilliant original. Amherst Regional softball senior pitcher Emma Mendoker was dazzling in her second straight state Division 1 semifinal against Milford, but this year, she and the Hurricanes walked away with the victory. Mendoker allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 12 as Amherst avenged last year's lone loss with a 3-0 win over the Scarlet Hawks at the UMass Softball Complex. The Hurricanes (23-1) will square off against defending state champion King Philip of Wrentham (25-0) for the state title Saturday at Worcester State at 7 p.m.
