But it was a heads-up defensive play by the standout freshman that keyed the Rams to the 54-43 win.

CHICOPEE - In the second quarter of Tuesday night's game against Gateway Regional, Holyoke Catholic guard Kieran Ramsey stepped back behind the 3-point line, received a perfect chest pass from guard Kyra Robins, ignored a hand in her face and made her second consecutive 3-pointer and third straight basket. Such was the case for the entire game, as the Gaels seemed to score on nearly every open chance they had, despite the best efforts of the Gator defenders to stop their offensive flow. That particular shot marked the point where Catholic really began to pull away from the Gators en route to a 48-24 win at Chicopee Academy.

Friday' basketball games: Easthampton girls cruise past Frontier

The Easthampton girls basketball moved into a virtual tie for first place in the Franklin South with a 47-27 win over Frontier Regional, Friday in South Deerfield. Elizabeth Whitney's 15 points and 15 rebounds paced the Eagles (13-3, 10-3 Franklin South), who are one-game back of Hopkins Academy (11-5, 11-3) in the win column.

NORTHAMPTON - The Northampton girls basketball team is just one win shy of clinching a postseason berth, but coach Perry Messer said his team was far from playoff ready after a frustrating performance Tuesday night against Central. "We have no excuses. We are playing for a chance to clinch, you have them on your home court and they are right behind you" in the standings, Messer said. "It's got to mean more to you. You have to put a little bit more effort into it." The Blue Devils struggled from start to finish and lost to the Golden Hawks 35-33.

Kieran Ramsey leads Holyoke Catholic basketball over Sci-Tech

Kieran Ramsey kept her recent string of strong play going as the Holyoke Catholic girls basketball team defeated Sci-Tech 52-35 at Holyoke Community College on Saturday.

Ramsey, who is averaging eight points per game on the season, has scored 47 points in her last three games for the Gaels (7-7, 4-2 Bi-County West).

Friday's girls basketball games: Hampshire Regional holds on for big win

The Hampshire Regional girls basketball team held on for an important 49-43 win Friday night at Belchertown as it attempts to qualify for the postseason. Sarah Kober had 13 points and 19 rebounds, while Anna Dziok added 11 points for the Raiders (6-7, 3-1 Bi-County East), which moved one step closer to 10 wins and stayed in the hunt for a league championship.

Alyssa Klepacki took another big step Wednesday night toward achieving the career 1,000-point milestone.

The senior scored 25 points and grabbed 24 rebounds to lead the Smith Academy girls basketball team to a 43-23 win over visiting Pioneer Regional.

Klepacki is now at 982 points for her career, and needs 18 to reach the mark at home against Greenfield on Friday night.

EASTHAMPTON - The Easthampton girls basketball team had a week off at the worst possible time. The Eagles suffered a disheartening loss to undefeated Mahar Regional on Jan. 17, giving up an eight point lead with three minutes left. Instead of getting right back on the court a few days later, they had seven to stew on it as they prepared for Tuesday's game against another solid squad, Athol. Like the final minutes of the three-point defeat to the Senators, nothing went right for the Eagles for all 32 minutes Tuesday night, which resulted in a 53-29 loss at home.

Hopkins girls basketball moves into first with win over Smith Academy

The Hopkins Academy girls basketball team completed its season sweep against rival Smith Academy and moved into first place with a 59-41 win at home Tuesday night.

After a close first two quarters, the Golden Hawks (9-4, 9-2 Franklin South) used their full-court press to force the Falcons (5-6, 4-6 Franklin South) into bad possessions in the second half and pulled away.

Northampton girls basketball crushes Westfield

Samantha Barnes led all scorers with 19 points as Northampton girls basketball cruised to an easy 74-29 win over Westfield Saturday.

Barnes also had 14 rebound, while Anna Walther had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-3).

Susan Bell had 15 points, six steals and six assists in the win.

HOLYOKE - The Amherst Regional girls basketball team couldn't finish off an impressive three-game trifecta Friday night.

Facing their third Division 1 title contender in as many games, the Hurricanes scored just three points in the final 5 minutes, 48 seconds and lost to Holyoke 46-43.
