WORCESTER - Seven on seven wasn't as kind to Frontier Regional this time around. After battling into double overtime before finally scoring the game winner in last week's Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament championship game, the Red Hawks allowed a goal 41 seconds into overtime of Monday night's state semifinal and lost 1-0 to Oakmont of Ashburnham at Foley Stadium. The Spartans (14-0-7) had the ball to open the sudden death period and immediately broke into the circle. Frontier (18-1-2) cleared it out once, but Oakmont retook control and Kathryn Nutting sent a cross to Audrey Brigham, who converted the shot for the victory.

The postseason is commonly called a second season throughout the sports landscape. With the time and events that will have occurred between the regular season finales and the first game of the playoffs, this year's Western Massachusetts field hockey tournaments will feel as much like a new season as any other. The top-seeded local teams in each field - Northampton in Division 1, Frontier Regional in Division 2 - will use the time off to go in different directions. For the Blue Devils, it's about a chance to turn things around after a tough final 10 days of the regular season.

HATFIELD - Sherry Webb knew the assembly scheduled for the final period of the day at Smith Academy was for her. The students and faculty hadn't tried very hard to keep that secret. There were well-wishing signs hung on seemingly every wall, door, window and display case at the Hatfield high school on her last day of work after 37 years as a coach, teacher and athletic director. Some were hand made in colored markers. Others were varied photocopied pictures of Webb coaching field hockey with printed messages alongside. All the signs conveyed a similar sentiment: Ms. Webb, as everyone calls her, is going to be missed.
