South Hadley boys lacrosse falls in final to Longmeadow

SPRINGFIELD # In its fourth-quarter comeback win over Longmeadow during the regular season, the South Hadley boys lacrosse team scored most of its late goals while a man down.

In Saturday's Western Massachusetts Division 2 title game, the Tigers also found themselves down a man for much of the final quarter, but this time the team with the man-advantage took advantage.

Amherst boys lacrosse back in tourney

Nick Johnson scored four goals and added an assist as the Amherst Regional boys lacrosse team clinched its first postseason berth since 2007 with a 10-4 win Monday in Northampton.

Zack Jackson had two goals and Kieran Presley, Willie Jackson, Joe Worthley and Dominick DeJesus all scored for the Hurricanes (9-4).

Ezra Ward made 13 saves in goal for Amherst.

Kieran Presley (one assist), Willie Jackson, Joe Worthley and Zack Jackson each added one goal for the Hurricanes (8-5) who moved to within one win of clinching their first postseason berth since 2007.

LONGMEADOW - It doesn't take much for the South Hadley-Longmeadow boys lacrosse rivalry to get stoked up. But Thursday afternoon's game between the last two western Massachusetts champions will be remembered by both teams for the rest of the season. The Tigers reeled off five of the final six goals to rally for a thrilling 14-13 victory in a rematch of the last two sectional title games. Chris Menard scored his fifth goal of the game with eight seconds remaining. He found the ball loose in front of the net and fired it past goalie David Walen (13 saves).

Northampton boys lacrosse struggles at home

Justin Golec had a goal and an assist as the Northampton boys lacrosse team lost 19-3 to West Springfield at home Friday.

Conor Abbatessa and Colin Sawula each added a goal for the Blue Devils (4-7, 3-4 Valley), while Will Lombardi had an assist.

Tyler Williams and Tyler Walsh combined for 14 saves in the loss.

Hurricanes boys lacrosse uses balance to beat Belchertown

Willie Jackson led five players with at least two goals as the Amherst boys lacrosse team defeated Belchertown 13-4 won on the road Monday.

Nick Johnson, Erik Abdow, Isaac Bass and Joe Worthley (two assists) scored two each for the Hurricanes (4-2). Kieran Presley added a goal and seven assists while Donovan Riley scored the other. Ezra Ward made seven saves.

AMHERST - The Amherst Regional boys lacrosse team has yet to make the postseason under fourth-year head coach Matt Crutch.

But with an improved attack and a stingy defense, this could be the year the Hurricanes reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Nick Johnson had two goals and two assists to lead the Amherst Regional boys lacrosse team to a 6-0 shutout victory over Monson at home.

Kieran Presley (one assist), Willie Jackson, Zachary Jackson and Cody Baglow each had one goal as the Hurricanes improved to 2-0.

Ezra Ward and Will Barstow combined for five saves in the shutout.

Belchertown boys lacrosse earns first win

Belchertown 11, Monson 5 - Adam Messier scored four goals and Ryan Jopson had three for the Orioles (1-1) at home.

Ian Sypek had eight saves in the win.

Every once in a while during practice this season, Belchertown senior Brianna Del Valle will look up at the school's 1,000-point banner and think "Hopefully. Hopefully." Now that the girls basketball center is just 16 points shy of the mark, the reality of becoming the program's second-ever player on the list is sinking in. Del Valle and the Orioles have a big Bi-County East matchup at Cathedral tonight.

AMHERST - The South Hadley and Longmeadow boys lacrosse teams Friday played a rematch of their 2009 Western Massachusetts Division 2 championship game, with a few notable changes. Again, the squads met on Garber Field at the University of Massachusetts, but this time, the Tigers were the No. 1 seed who had defeated the Lancers twice during the regular season. And this time, it was No. 3 Longmeadow which pulled the upset, defeating South Hadley 9-5 to advance to the state tournament.

SOUTH HADLEY - The opening was so small that any hesitation would have been too late.

But South Hadley junior Zak Guenther had plenty of confidence in his long-time teammate and fired a long pass from the right side of the field through the closing Minnechaug Regional defense to Luke Dilisio on the far post.

NORTHAMPTON - From the beginning of Thursday's game, it was clear that all of Minnechaug's defenders knew to keep an eye on No. 20 for the Northampton boys lacrosse team.

Tiger boys get top lacrosse seed

Having the top western Massachuesetts goaltender in Sean Mackey helped the South Hadley boys lacrosse team go 18-1 in the regular season.

The defending Western Massachusetts Division 2 champion, which also has one of the area's leading scorers in Chris Menard, received the No. 1 seed in this year's tournament.

Tigers avenge lone loss

South Hadley 18, Westfield 7 - The Tigers clinched the Valley Wheel title and avenged their lone loss of the season with the win at home on senior night.

Chris Menard had six goals and three assists, while Luke Dilisio added five goals and one assist for South Hadley (17-1, 6-1 Valley Wheel).

Golec scores five in Hamp win

Northampton 14, Belchertown 5 - Led by Justin Golec's five goals, the Blue Devils (13-5, 7-2 Valley League) jumped out to a 12-2 lead at halftime and rolled past the Orioles (0-15, 0-10).

Charlie Cronin (one assist), Chris Warton (one assist) and Alex Stokowski each scored two goals for Northampton, and Connor Abbatessa added a goal and two assists.

Tigers top Hurricanes

South Hadley 12, Amherst 8 - The Hurricanes (7-9, 1-5) tied the game briefly at the start of the third quarter but the Tigers (15-1, 6-1 Valley Wheel) came right back to win on the road.

The victory clinched at least a share of the league title for the Tigers, who last earned a piece of the championship in 2007.
