Sam Coates-Finke named Gazette Boys Cross Country Player of Year

Sam Coates-Finke learned everything he knows about running during his first cross country season for Northampton.

As a junior, he studied under seniors Ian Lutz and Harrison Hunter. That team eventually won the western Massachusetts Division 1 championship.

Madison Granger takes fourth; Amherst Regional strong at state cross country

Local cross country runners enjoyed strong performances at the Division 1 state championship meet in Saturday at Franklin Park in Dorchester.

Madison Granger from Belchertown finished in fourth place overall while the Amherst boys and girls cross country teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the team competition.

NORTHFIELD - The five seniors on the Amherst Regional boys cross country team had one goal in mind Saturday and that was to return home with the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Championship. Mission accomplished. The Hurricanes placed five runners in the top 15 to win with 52 points at Northfield Mountain. It was Amherst's ninth title since 1999 and first since 2008. "We needed to get it done this year," James Traester said. "We hadn't won it since we were freshmen and we looked up to those guys who won it. We didn't get it done the last two years but finally we did it."

The roles are reversed this postseason.

The Amherst Regional boys and girls cross country teams are the favorites at Saturday's western Massachusetts championships.

The boys and girls of defending champion Northampton are the underdogs.

Amherst Regional sweeps Northampton cross country

The Northampton boys and girls cross country might be the defending sectional champions, but Amherst Regional made it clear it's a challenger.

The Amherst boys beat the Blue Devils 23-26, while the Amherst girls won 18-43 Tuesday in Amherst.

Gateway girls cross country splits tri-meet

Katie Clark and Ashley Yost finished in the top 10 overall as the Gateway Regional girls cross country team earned a split with Westfield and Chicopee Comp Thursday.

Gateway beat Chicopee Comp 17-41 but fell to Westfield 22-39, at Stanley Park in Westfield.

Clark was second on the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 54 seconds. Yost was fourth in 23:02.

Ludlow edges Amherst Regional, hands boys cross country team first loss

In a battle of cross country unbeatens Tuesday, the Amherst Regional boys fell one place short in a 28-29 loss to Ludlow.

"It was an incredibly exciting and intense race," Hurricanes coach Chris Gould said. "We were pretty upset with the outcome, but Ludlow's a great team."

Staci Rezendes has picked up right where the regular season ended last year. Hopefully, that means a better postseason.

The Holyoke Catholic senior, who went undefeated during the 2010 season, won her sixth straight race Tuesday at Whiting Reservoir in Holyoke.

Matt Iczkowski fires 30 to pace Granby golf

Matt Iczkowski had a round to remember Tuesday.

Iczkowski, who is a junior at Holyoke Catholic, shot a 6-under 30 to lead the Granby golf team to an 18½-5½ victory over Hopkins Academy at The Ledges in South Hadley.

"I hadn't heard that one too often," Granby coach Tom Burke said. "I don't remember one."

High School cross country teams across Massachusetts flocked to Hampshire College this past Saturday to face an early season test at the 16th annual Amherst Invitational 5K.

It was the events biggest field in history with 25 different schools ranging from New Hampshire to Connecticut as well as the Commonwealth.

Hopkins golf rallies to defeat Ware

The Hopkins Academy golf team trailed 7-1 after the first group finished Wednesday.

By the end of the match, the Golden Hawks had a comfortable 16-8 victory over Ware at Dunroamin Country Club in Gilbertville.

Brittany Dalton, Julie Roberts lead Hampshire Regional cross country

The Hampshire Regional duo of Brittany Dalton and Julie Roberts was too tough for Monson and Southwick to handle.

Dalton placed first and Roberts second as the Raiders girls cross country team beat Southwick 26-29 and Monson 19-39, Tuesday at Monson's 2.8-mile course.

Dalton finished in 17 minutes, 58 seconds. Roberts was about a minute behind in 18:53.

Amherst runners get off to a fast start

The Amherst Regional boys and girls cross country teams got their season off on the right foot Thursday.

The boys defeated Longmeadow 20-42 and East Longmeadow 15-50 while the girls beat Longmeadow 26-30, and East Longmeadow 16-47.

Ben Gagne-Maynard won the 2.55-mile boys race in 13 minutes, 56 seconds but the Hurricanes took the next seven spots in nearly identical times.

Amherst boys run to third at Guilderland Invitational

James Traester and Jesse Coull each finished in the top 10 to lead the Amherst Regional boys cross country team to a third-place finish in the Guilderland Invitational in Guilderland, N.Y.

The Hurricanes scored a total of 82 points, finishing behind only New York schools Burnt Hill (57 points) and Shenendehowa (81).

GARDNER - The Northampton boys cross country team entered the state Division 1 championship meet Saturday with a shot at the top prize.

But the strength of the field kept the Blue Devils from claiming it.

Northampton finished sixth with score of 164 at Gardner Municipal Golf Course. Brookline won the championship with a score of 114.

Winning day for Northampton cross country teams which run to first titles

PITTSFIELD - The progressive rise to the top for the Northampton boys and girls cross country teams reached its zenith Saturday.

The Blue Devils dominated the field at Berkshire Community College and each team took home their first Division 1 title at the Western Massachusetts Championships.

Gaels girls finish second at cross country championships

PITTSFIELD - The depth of the Division 2 girls field at the Western Massachusetts Cross Country Championships Saturday led Holyoke Catholic coach John Goda to believe his team could finish anywhere from second to sixth.

The Gaels' best runner did not have her best day, yet the team earned second place behind two-time champ Mount Greylock which cruised with 38 points on the 3.1-mile course at Berkshire Community College.
