On Tuesday, America made history with the election of its next president, Barack Obama. In this space today, GazetteNET features nine short essays solicited from area academics. They were asked to share thoughts on Obama's historic run to the White House. Professors wrote about rejoicing at Obama's selection, how he was able to achieve the highest position in the U.S., the historic significance of his presidency and what challenges lie ahead.

    Of course, this is America's other "national" newspaper, with a somewhat less progressive political slant than the Times, and it's at th epeicenter of national politics. This page is pundit-heavy, and also has solid multimedia and statistical offerings.

    All the campaign video you could want, free of any filters -- as always, C-Span just points the camera and shoots. One fo the best resources for video on Congressional and state races throughout the country, too.
  • CNN's Election Center
    Includes the CNN "Poll of Polls," estimates and an Electoral College calculator, blogs and other resources.
  • Politico.com
    A couple of Time and Washington Post veterans helm this online site that takes the next step for Beltway-centric viewpoints. Some of the campaign's hottest news has been broken here, and the Daily Briefings and blogs seem to be 24/7.
  • FiveThirtyEight.com
    Nate Silver, one of the statheads behind the deep numbers-based analysis at baseball enthusiast site BaseballProspectus.com, turned his info-crunching to the 2008 races; FiveThirtyEight has quickly become required reading for those who want to know what the polls and other statistical trends leading up to Election Day might really mean.
  • RealClearPolitics.com
    Another comprehensive online breakout site from this election cycle. The index of latest polls is a political numbers geek's dream site, covering just about every polled race throughout the country.
