Maureen T. Carney: Alisa Klein brings skills that government needs

To the editor:

Voters in Ward 7 have a great opportunity to elect a highly qualified and committed candidate to the Northampton City Council: Alisa Klein. With a long and varied career as a professional consultant and community activist, Alisa brings a wealth of skills that will be extremely valuable to our city government: mediation, education, policy analysis, social justice advocacy and much more.

Alisa is a team-builder, fostering successful partnerships among diverse groups and bridging divides. She is a citizen dedicated to her community, volunteering on the Leeds Civic Association and active in local issues including activities in Florence and Leeds.

Alisa will listen to all of the residents of Ward 7 and represent their needs diligently in City Council. She will fight for smart budgeting and to ensure that her neighbors in Leeds and Florence can stay in their homes and continue to make Ward 7 a flourishing part of Northampton. I am happy to support her candidacy.

So why are you supporting a candidate in a ward in which you can't even vote? I don't think it's fitting for city councilors to throw their support behind ward candidates. Isn't it up to the voters of that ward to make up their own minds? It looks as if members of the majority on the city council are trying to eliminate the one really independent voice in their midst. Why are they so afraid of what is often a sole vote in opposition? They can't stomach one dissenting opinion?
