Declan J. Sheehy: Gazette headline struck reader as most bizarre
To the editor:
When are we going to be rid of religious labels? I was reading your paper July 19 when I came across the most bizarre headline “University of California names Muslin as student regent.”
I immediately thought that the century must have been incorrect and the real date was sometime in 1803. But alas no. I could not believe that this headline was published. Could you imagine it saying a Catholic named as student regent, or a Protestant. I am in complete disbelief. Why not a headline saying “University of California names talented young women Sadia Saiffudin as student regent. Now that would be something, but do we have to wait another century or two?
